Just a whisper away from the winding lanes of Georgian Highgate, East Finchley, with its neat streets, and very different vibe, is one of the most genteel suburbs of North London. Delicious delis and coffee shops rub up against art galleries, book shops and gastropubs. This is a pocket of breezily cool suburbia that sits next door to the wild woods and heathland of Hampstead. And amidst all of this is Springcroft Avenue, a spacious three bedroom family house with a large, grassy garden, and an architectural glass extension that will make aesthetes gasp with delight.
Your hosts are an Anglo-Australian family with almost half a century of roots in North London. Now retired, he worked as a management consultant while she has worked as a psychologist, university lecturer and personal trainer. With two sons about to enter the world of work, the couple spend a lot of time in their second home in Italy, but love Springcroft Avenue for its juxtaposition of country walks and cosmopolitan restaurants.
Enjoy the warmth of the bright sitting room with its corner-set wood burning stove, modern sofas and large flatscreen TV. If you tire of watching the world go by through the large window, wander through to the family room at the back of the house. Its huge space houses a modern kitchen with white New York-style tiles, a dining room that seats six, and a low seating area for those even less formal moments. And then there's that great glass extension opening onto the private garden. Upstairs, sun streams through a bay window and dapples the floorboards in the study, while next door there's a pair of sizeable bedrooms and a sea green family bathroom. Further up, the top floor is entirely given to the master suite, decked in elegant cream, lined with bespoke cupboards and drawers, and with its own large ensuite.
