Since Pink Floyd’s iconic 1977 album cover for Animals, Battersea has become one of London’s most sought-after areas for young professionals and families. Now bars, restaurants, and gastro pubs jostle for space. Just across the river from Chelsea and minutes from the shops of Battersea Square with its sidewalk cafes that remind one of Paris' St Germain, you'll discover an elegant three bedroom, two bathroom Victorian home where chic French style combines with impeccable British design to create a wonderful elegant home.
Your hosts are a sophisticated duo. Their vibrant story contains romance, adventure, and a generous smattering of glamour. They met in the late 60s in Paris with a whiff of revolution in the air, they later travelled to LA where he worked in the film industry. After a few years of globe-trotting they returned to London where she has been running her own successful interior design business. Forty-three happy years of marriage, two children and two grandsons later, we find them enjoying London life to the full.
There is an effortlessness about French style, it just seems to comes naturally, and throughout this graceful home, understated design subtly makes its own impression. In a tranquil sitting room, huge shuttered windows drench two upholstered silver chairs, a floral rug and a marble fireplace in sunlight. Walking through into the adjacent kitchen trendy grey units and slate floor tiles compliment the red Aga cooker and a raspberry and cream French sofa. Recline with a coffee, and enjoy the view through glass doors to a charming, secluded garden.
Climb the stairs to a luxuriant master bedroom in shades of salmon and off-white. Next door, a striking black, white and mirrored ensuite will help wash away the cares of the day. Further up and a pretty cabin style single room is a cosy retreat for the kids. There's another double bedroom at the very top in soft greys and whites- it's ensuite shower room a haven of airy tranquillity.
For culture vultures Theatre 503 and the celebrated Battersea Arts Centre are de rigueur. Spend a beautiful day exploring the green and sprawling acres of Battersea Park, then perhaps some Gypsy Swing at the Le Quecum Bar. Its cool 1930s décor attracts all manner of patron- Jonny Depp and Sir Bob Geldoff to name but a couple. For more adventures, central London can be reached within 25 minutes by bus or train.
