Hold onto your hats, because here’s a home that even Gatsby would call great.
A combination of Harvard class and Lower East Side cool, you’ll be enraptured by the walnut floors, the furniture’s chic lines, and the gentle twinkle of chandeliers. And with the famous museums the briefest of walks away, and Hyde Park just beyond, there's plenty to keep you occupied. But although the bars and restaurants of Kensington will be exerting their pull, do spend at least one evening in. Whiskey and rye never tasted better than from the comfort of that wonderful leather couch.
Your hosts are a young couple who spend much of their time overseas. He’s a hospitality entrepreneur, and when not at his desk, he’s playing in his band. Your hostess meanwhile, is a former model, now working in digital media. Together they've juxtaposed English, Antipodean, and US styles throughout their home, to sublime effect.
Park yourself on the sitting room’s chocolate leather sofa and admire the combination of period features and stylish contemporary design. Light flooding through the beautiful shuttered windows plays across the vast flatscreen TV, electric guitars and imposing fireplace. While a huge Playboy cover print is illuminated by the elegant lamps and glittering chandelier. The kitchen’s at once rustic and contemporary, with slate floors and bench seating, while the appliances are sparklingly modern.
Be sure to stop on your way downstairs to admire the stylish cloakroom with its glorious heritage wallpaper, then head to the lower ground floor. Here you’ll find three bedrooms to explore. There’s a sage-coloured single, with a brand new ensuite, and a tartan-clad double leading out onto a small patio. The master bedroom is simply magnificent, its chunky kingsized bed sitting in splendour amidst sheepskin rugs, more lovely wallpaper and a Bose surround sound system. And next door there’s a black marble ensuite, with underfloor heating and heaps of our fluffy white towels.
Saunter over to Gloucester Road’s cafes, and then either while away a morning in the museums or choose between the shops of Kensington and Knightsbridge. If you’re in the mood for romance, take a boat out on the Serpentine, or turn the other way and saunter along the river. And when cocktail hour approaches, South Kensington tube station is just a two minutes stroll away. From here, it's a short eight minutes to Piccadilly Circus and the lights of the West End.
