Let down your hair and kick off your shoes, for here, right in zone one, is a corner of the city where leaves dance, birds call and daisies speckle the turf. Not only have you your own private patch, but beyond you’ll find the majestic expanses of Ladbroke Grove II’s majestic, mature communal gardens. Inside, your home is sophisticated and airy, white walls are decked with some enigmatic modern art. Take a trip to Portobello Road Market, eat out in Notting Hill, or run riot in Kensington Gardens. Whether you’re feeding the squirrels or splashing in the Serpentine, you’ll feel so fabulously free.
Isn’t she good
Your hostess is from Norway, and she and her teenage daughter love the calm and quiet of their London home. She’s a clinical psychologist, and she needs every ounce of silence, as she’s currently working on her latest academic paper.
Look up to see the intricate, Regency-style ceiling, then across for the original fireplace, and rooms proportionately elegant and lovely. There’s Nordic purity in this home, every texture and every line sings its beauty. And there’s rest for the body as well as the soul, for the furniture is as contemporary as the artwork - a velvet sofa, designer chairs, and a snowy dining table that six can sit around.
The restful master bedroom is on the lower ground floor, with views out into the garden’s lush undergrowth. Spread out on the cream, kingsized leather bed, after testing the dove grey ensuite’s steam room. The single bedroom has more original artwork, and a gorgeous antique dressing table. And next door there’s another double bedroom, plus a spot-lit family bathroom with a bathtub and shower. But, best of all, open the back door to discover your very own patio garden, screened from the rest of the world by dense, dark foliage.
On the outside
You’ve a choice – are you feeling English, or international? If it’s tradition you’re after, then head for Holland Park, where you’ll find pretty gastropubs, organic butchers and sweet cafes. Or if you’re in the mood for something a little more metropolitan, turn instead to Notting Hill, and mingle with the smart set in the bars and boutiques. The tube from Holland Park to Oxford Circus takes ten minutes.
