An exciting idea on a grand scale… St Stephen’s Crescent fuses the old with the new to exhilarating effect. London living turned on its head, this is an upside down townhouse that’s a bit rustic, a bit modern and very, very cool. The top floor’s entirely open plan, creating a living space that’s more akin to a loft than a Victorian house, while downstairs, the two double bedrooms are airy and unfussy. You’re a five minute walk from Portobello Road Market and the sweet temptations of the Hummingbird Bakery. Stay out late in Notting Hill’s restaurants and bars, then come home to perfect peace, and dream American dreams.
When not in London, your host is an Englishman in New York. A development executive for a film production company, he’s constantly seeking inspiration, and his UK home reflects his creative, playful nature. A Notting Hill native, when it came to setting down roots in the capital, nowhere else would do.
We’ll have Manhattan…
The top floor of St Stephen’s Crescent is open and bright, with doors leading out onto two separate roof terraces. You’ve views reaching from Wembley to The Shard, and plenty of space to sit and dream beneath the night sky. Inside, it’s all exposed brickwork and polished floorboards, and hipster types will swoon over the gramophone and vintage typewriter. This home was once home to a professional chef, and thus the compact kitchen is top of the range, lit from above by a sunny skylight.
Downstairs, you’ll discover two double bedrooms, one with a shower room and one with an ensuite. Look out for the trompe l’oeil shutter painting in the master bedroom, and the guest double bedroom’s distinguished portraits.
Hit the sidewalk
Explore the garden squares of Notting Hill, or admire the grandeur of Kensington Gardens, before retreating to Bayswater for lunch, where you’ll find some of the city’s best Asian restaurants. Try not to stay up too late because Portobello Road Antiques Market is best tackled early… or, if you prefer to do your shopping in a more traditional venue, the tube from Royal Oak to Covent Garden takes around twenty five minutes.
