Talk about making a statement! Faraday Road is one eyeful of a home. Scarlet walls (and this is the red of a ripe tomato, not some wishy-washy wannabe), sunshine yellow, the blue of the sky on the very first day of June… a stay here is to cloak oneself in the very essence of life. But first impressions are only half the story, for this home is filled with funky furniture, books and an eclectic collection of art. On a quiet side street, but just a walk away from Portobello Road Market, Notting Hill and affluent Holland Park, a stay here will leave you revived and delightfully invigorated.
Your hostess is originally from New York, but has called London home for twenty years. She loves the diversity of this area and adores entertaining, and with a home this fabulous, one can see why.
Faraday Road blazes with passion. The sitting room is at once hip and yet soothingly womb-like, its walls holding you safe in their glowing embrace. Textured leather and hand-woven textiles lend a trendy atmosphere, while next door, the TV and dining room is just as riotous. This time, it’s books and furniture that give the room its vibrancy, and you’ve views out into the wild pink and purple patio garden.
The kitchen holds mementos from around the world, and those daffodil-hued cabinets hide all sorts of useful utensils. The two bedrooms are downstairs, and here, the vibe is that little bit more gentle. The queensized double’s floral wallpaper echoes the garden’s tangled foliage, while the kingsized master is gloriously moody in brooding purple and grey. And a soak in the headily blue bathroom will set your heart aflutter, however dull the weather.
Across the spectrum
You’re steps away from Portobello Road, perhaps the only spot in London that can match the boundless energy of this home. There’s another street market on nearby Golborne Road, as well as some scrummy bakeries and a clutch of international restaurants. Walk to Kensington Gardens and Holland Park, or take the tube into the West End. The journey from Ladbroke Grove to Oxford Circus lasts around half an hour.
