This four bedroom, two bathroom Victorian townhouse is a picture of period elegance, having kept many original features alongside a slick modern renovation. In the heart of Hammersmith, Melrose Gardens is fringed with fun things to do, so catch a show at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, soak up some history at the William Morris society, or travel further a-field and take a day trip to the Cotswold or Bath. In the evening, sample the fantastic array of fine restaurants and pubs right on your doorstep, or venture in to town and explore the West End. Once home, tuck the kids up in bed, and enjoy a hot toddy around the garden’s al fresco dining suite.
Your host is making the most their retirement by renovating Melrose Gardens over five years, retaining much of its Victorian charm. With her two daughters she enjoys the hustle and bustle of Hammersmith and runs a local charitable book festival there. When she’s not living life to the full in London, she’s relaxing at her second home in Yorkshire.
Close to home
Spend some quality time with those closest to you in this large family home, curled up in the cosy sitting room, where a terracotta coloured ottoman is begging to be graced with your tootsies. Prop up with a pillow and read a book in front of the working fireplace, or simply sit back and admire the grand, high ceilings and eye-catching lampshade. Next door, teach your kids to tinkle the ivories in the classic music room, or enjoy a family meal in the stunning split-level kitchen, where a 19th century French wooden table offsets the super-sleek fixtures. Upstairs you’ll find a delicate twin bedroom with buddleia print wallpaper, a similarly elegant cloakroom and an impressive bathroom, complete with a wardrobe, walk-in shower and a bath, so pop a towel on the heated rack while the water runs. Next door, admire the huge master bedroom from the comfort of the king sized bed or the chaise longue – how the light from the bay window fills the room and the antique furniture has been curated so thoughtfully. Ascending further still, explore the second floor’s adorable two single bedrooms, kitted out for kids with toys and trinkets, and the children’s own little bathroom.
Home and away
If you can tear yourself away from the warming four walls of Melrose Gardens, wander over to the Westfield Centre for one of best shopping experiences in London, or to Shepherd’s Bush market, which is a more authentic affair. For a slice of culture, head to Fulham Palace or the world famous BBC centre. The nearest underground station is just a five minute walk away.
