Searching for a star? Look no further than Hollywood Mews. Extravagantly eclectic and simply oozing character, this home is simply spellbinding. And, for those who like to make an entrance, there’s nothing quite like a sweeping staircase. Much-talked about for its ritzy residents and elegant streets, this part of town has all the romance of the Hollywood Hills with a generous dash of London charm. You’re within an easy walk of the museums, and when it comes to a new gown or a smart tux, choose between the boutiques of Chelsea’s King’s Road, or Kensington High Street. And don’t forget your autograph book, will you?
See and be seen
Your hosts are a pair of photographers, specialising in celebrity portraits – you’ll spot their work all around the house. They came to Hollywood Mews in the seventies, and they like it so much, your host’s mother has moved in around the corner.
Here’s lookin’ at you, kid
You’ll notice this home’s intricate, hand-carved doors – your hosts spotted them faraway, shipped them home and designed their whole house around them. The dining room, down on the ground floor, is a medley of different woods, from the carefully polished to the lovingly reclaimed. There’s a country feel to the compact kitchen, while the sitting room is spacious, yet cosy, with rambling rose wallpaper, and well-loved chocolate leather chairs. You’ve an abundance of books, and a working fireplace beside which to enjoy them, along with kooky lamps and more vintage furniture crafted from that beautiful old wood.
The three bedrooms - two singles and a double – are distinctive and terrific fun, the master bedroom’s particularly delightful, with another working fireplace, and an enormous super kingsized bed.
Lights, camera, action
You’re a handful of minutes from Gloucester Road, where you’ve the startling grandeur of the museums, and all sorts of sweet independent restaurants and cafes. For shopping, check out King’s Road and Kensington High Street, and, only a little further, the designer paradise of Knightsbridge. Or, if Theatreland’s calling, the tube from Gloucester Road to Covent Garden takes twelve minutes.
