From the first shy peep of sunlight to the last, lingering ripple of warmth on the river, Kew is bright as well as beautiful. Here, flowerbeds are famous, seabirds sun their wings on the water and the living, well, it doesn’t get any lovelier. Which brings us to Old Dock Close. Daylight dazzles every corner of this crisp, modern home, snuggling into its sofas, bathing its bright white walls. The little ones will love the garden’s play area, while grown-ups can gaze wistfully at the river from the second floor. Whether it’s Kew Gardens or leafy Chiswick next, you’ll surely take a shine to this home.
Your hosts are a cool, creative pair. While redesigning their home, they would sketch each room freehand before pinning it to the wall for the builders. She is a freelance writer, he a barrister, and they have two children.
A big, bright family home, Old Dock Close is also bang up to date. The kitchen is sleek in sky blue, and sunlight pours across its warm wooden floor. Here you can brew a smooth coffee before carrying it through to the open plan dining room, with its deep red sofa and dining table for six. The kids have a cosy playroom, while the garden’s play area will keep them happy as you warm up the barbecue or lounge on the deckchairs.
Upstairs brings you to the bright, spacious sitting room overlooking the river. All white walls, cream carpet and cosiness, it has an L shaped sofa, long, squashy window seat and some snug leather armchairs to choose from. You’ve a fresh, airy bedroom, two modern bathrooms and three more bedrooms upstairs. The boy’s bedroom is colourful, the girl’s dainty and sweet, while the master is large and lovely, with an open plan ensuite and stunning river views from the picture window.
You’re only a few footsteps from the river and a restful stroll along the towpath. Oliver’s Island, reputedly where Cromwell sought refuge, can be seen just over the waters, or you can find sanctuary yourself in the beauty of Kew Gardens. As well as those famous flowerbeds, you’ve plenty of picturesque cafes and shopettes dotted about. Flow over the river to Chiswick’s parks and restaurants, or head up to town. You can catch a boat into Waterloo, or hop on the tube and be at Oxford Circus in a little over half an hour.
