Prebend Street is a home whose very structure is handsome, where the proportions are perfection and even the hallways are photogenic. This Victorian house has been entirely remodelled, and its pale, airy rooms filled with luminous modern furniture, with art and objects from near and far. Like Islington, it’s quirky, welcoming and bang on trend. Step outside and you’ll see what we mean - parades of buzzy cafes, independent shops and packed neighbourhood restaurants serving up a range of international cuisines. Drawing the young and the young-at-heart from right across London, there’s no better place to come and play.
In the planning
Your host is an architect, and it was his guiding hand that nurtured this house from a ruin into the family home you see now. He’s Scandinavian, while your hostess is from India, and together, they and their two little boys have filled Prebend Street with beauty and love.
These four walls
It’s almost impossible to believe that this house was once a derelict shell. Now, the sunny basement holds a shiny new kitchen, its intricate Indian vases lit with pendant lights. There’s a glossy dining table, too, and a colourful family zone opening out into the walled garden. Upstairs, the white sitting room’s calm and pretty, and there’s a handy adjoining office lined with books and translucent ghost chairs. There are three bedrooms, a guest double in the basement, a banana-yellow nursery, and the master bedroom. With its deceptively simple design and two original sash windows looking out over the street below, there’s a Scandi freshness to this space, a sense of soft breezes and pure, new-fallen snow.
Head up Essex Road, past jazzy restaurants, vintage emporia and a handy branch of Planet Organic, and into Angel, the apex of Islington. This is the destination of choice for media types, cockney traders and young parents, with its bars, independent shops and old Chapel Market. Duck down Roseberry Avenue for Saddler’s Wells theatre and romantic al fresco dining on Exmouth Market, or jump on a 38 bus. It doesn’t take long to drive into the West End, or, the tube from Angel to Oxford Circus takes just twelve minutes.
