Hushed and laid-back, Fulham is the city’s slow movement. Its graceful streets could easily be set to a harp cadenza or the lilting strains of a Chopin nocturne. But do let us conduct you to Epirus Road. Airy, modern and bright, it’s not hard to hymn the praises of such a home. You’ve instruments at every turn – a cello here, a guitar there, a tempting piano just waiting to be tinkled. Even the kitchen’s maple flooring was reclaimed from a dance hall. Whether it’s a moonlight sonata on the patio or the pomp and circumstance of Chelsea, this is a home that strikes every right note.
Your hosts hail from America, but have lived in the UK for twenty years. A cosmopolitan clan, their children are fluent in French and you’ll see Italian cookbooks aplenty in the kitchen. Needless to say, they are a decidedly musical bunch, too.
With three storeys and five bedrooms, this family home knows the meaning of scale. The sitting room is smartly inviting, featuring an array of string instruments and two sofas in soft grey. Pop some music on, or dance through to the dining room where you’ve a table for six. The kitchen is spacious and warmingly bright, thanks to its floor to ceiling windows which welcome the outside all the way in. Compose something delightful for dinner – there’s a breakfast bar with space for four and still more seating on the patio. Leafy and well-kept, this is just the spot for a nightcap or morning jug of coffee.
The master bedroom is brightly elegant, and there’s a tempting steam shower in the ensuite. There are single bedrooms for both girls and boys, as well as two doubles, one minimalist, the other with a piano, mic and amp. As for our yummy White Company goodies, you’ll also find them in the bright bathroom and a second gleaming ensuite.
A pastoral quiet possesses Fulham’s many parks, and there’s a hushed melody to the rolling river. But, to turn up the volume, just try the boutiques and bars of Chelsea or cheer for the Blues as they take the field at Stamford Bridge. As for live music, there’s the Royal Albert Hall, the Hammersmith Apollo and the many venues of town. The tube from Fulham Broadway to Piccadilly Circus takes just over twenty minutes.
