The compound itself is made up of seven units, four of them 40’s cottages and two of those are now offered as vacation rentals. The owners, Allan, a Canadian film-maker and Chiyoko, a Japanese writer live on the site and have created a way of living they are happy to share.
Each unit overlooks a small private sitting garden and larger common gardens are nearby. Various tables and fire pits invite intimate or expansive al fresco dining. A Balinese daybed is for chilling or outdoor sleeping.
The compound was recently on the famous Venice House & Garden Tour and the local newspaper called it ‘most enticing’. Also various areas were used as a location for several films.
$2700/month, $800/week. $125/night (minimum 5 days) 50% payable upon booking and 50% payable upon arrival. $60 one time cleaning fee. $40/night for each extra adult (over 18) on the sofa bed.
Fully furnished for elegant living, the kitchen is equipped with an espresso machine, filtered water, etc. A queen sized bed, linens and towels are provided, free do-it-yourself laundry, free internet and cable, free loan of bikes, free fully enclosed parking for one car, vaulted ceiling, hardwood floor, DVD and book library and a breakfast bar. Friendly and arty neighbors. Small animals are welcomed and can safely run free.
The property is in the center of Venice’s semi-secret Oakwood area which has the highest number of artists per capita outside of NYC's Soho area. It is a neighborhood where locals have pride of place and greet each other as they walk, skate and bike around.
Local attractions are Gold’s flagship gym and across the street is Google. Dozens of yoga and Pilates studios are within stretching distance. Don’t miss what’s left of the canals which gave Venice its name. The brand new skateboarding park is next to the original Muscle Beach. Some say the biggest local attraction is the beach others say it’s the swarming bikini boardwalk next to it. Both are five blocks away. Oakwood is anchored by Abbot Kinney Boulevard (named after the turn-of-the-century visionary who built Venice as a summer get-away from Los Angeles.) This strip was recently called ‘the hippest street in America’ by GQ. The ‘next big thing’ is nearby Rose Avenue where healthy food and drink is the agenda.
Neighborhoods to the north are trendy Santa Monica, laid-back Malibu and rustic Topanga. To the east is Lincoln Boulevard with ‘the sexiest Whole Foods on planet earth” so sez the LA Times. Also a plethora of pot shops and tattoo emporiums. To the south are Marina Del Ray for sailing and Culver City for galleries. The Santa Monica Freeway takes you downtown in 25 minutes and the Pacific Coast Highway can drop you at the airport in 15 minutes.
What else? Venice Love is a certain relaxed funkiness, it’s ten kinds of fruit trees, nine chimes, six kinds of bamboo, three fountains, two portable Weber BBQs and a little brown hen who lays tasty eggs. It’s all pretty authentically Venice Beach so it’s not for everybody but maybe just perfect for the right person.TripAdvisor property ID 3482934...Read more

We just returned from a week in this cottage and can't say enough good things about our stay. From the moment I talked to allan and Chiyoko about staying here I knew they were special people. The price can't be beat and you get a tonne of stuff: great cozy cottage for 2 people, well-stocked kitchen, comfy bed, free wifi, off-street parking, beach towels, free laundry, and the use of bikes and bbq's. As others have mentioned, you are close to many good resto's, Abbott Kinney, grocery stores, Gold's Gym and yoga/spin gyms, and about a 10-minute walk to the beach. The compound is difficult to describe unless you've been there - it's hard to believe you're in the middle of busy Venice surrounded by a tranquil garden that lights up in a funky way at night, a resident chicken, and 2 dogs. You will hear street noise and the neighbours here - you're living in the middle of a humming neighbourhood here, not a noise-proof hotel. This is a place where you can be as social as you wish, but also have your space.
Allan and Chiyoko are warm and inviting and made us feel like they'd do anything to help make our stay as comfortable as possible. Thank you! You are amazing hosts and a wonderful couple - so glad we had the chance to spend time with you!

The perfect place to relax and recharge. I immediately felt like home and enjoyed the interaction with other tenants and owners. The garden is a wonderful place to have a BBQ / dinner with friends, other tenants and owners.
Entertainment and restaurants are within a 5 minute walking distance just in case you do not feel like preparing your own meal or just want to feel the vibe of Venice Beach.
Thanks for the kind words.
We love guests who are Canadian
and green and chill and witty.
Keep us us mind next time you
get divorced, Allan

Alan and Chiyoko are Venice royalty. He is a famous hollywood director (you have to stay there to find out which one! I'm not telling!), and very creative and inviting. Chiyoko is a famous writer in her native Japan, speaks fluent Japanese, and has created a tranquil zen garden inside the whole compound. They are two of the most loving kind people I've ever met. I envy their full-time tenants. I've been to Venice pretty much all year 'round, so don't think of this a summer-only destination. It's La folks: endless summer. The cottage is very cozy and funky. They spared no expense to make it nice. It's like one of those Bali cottages, but you don't have to go to Bali to get it. The kitchen was perfect for cooking in, so we didn't have to eat out everytime. You can walk to the famous eateries in the area, the Sidewalk Cafe, Joe's, The Rose Cafe. Whole Foods is just few blocks away as is Ralph's (the gorcery store from The Big Lebowski). If you're lucky enough to be visiting during a compound party you'll be invited to join in and meet and greet all sorts of artists, fillmakers, etc. On the street live a fmous movie actor, and a famous rock band singer, and also just regular folks. Be sure to buy some corn on the cob from the corn vendor. Wonderful! And have breakfast at the Sunday farmer's market! If you're going to stay in La, and you have your choice of location, Venice should be your first pick, and this cottage should be your destination. I'm a college professor; my husband is a writer/editor, and we brought our 3 y/o daughter and our doggie with us. We are in our 40s, so it's a place for all ages. Realy cannot say enough how much we loved the cottage and owners a&C.; It's something special, this place. You'll be spirited away. Thank you so much for everything a&C.; We're coming back next year!
