Additional Location Information

Lyme Regis is a beautiful seaside town in Lyme Bay at the Dorset-Devon border, 25 miles west of Dorchester and 25 miles east of Exeter.

Nicknamed "The Pearl of Dorset" it was a major port in the 13th century.

Lyme Regis is well-known for "The Cobb" a harbour wall full of character and history. It features in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion (1818) and in the film The French Lieutenant's Woman by local writer John Fowles.

The town is famous for the fossils found in the cliffs and beaches. Many of the earliest discoveries of dinosaur and other prehistoric reptile remains were made in the area surrounding Lyme Regis by Mary Anning (1799–1847).

Finds include Ichthyosaur, Plesiosaur, Dimorphodon, Scelidosaurus and Dapedium.

The town now holds an annual Fossil Festival and Mary Anning Day.
