Additional Location Information

Mailhac sur Benaize is just outside the northern Haute Vienne town of St Sulpice les Feuilles. The cottage is excellently placed for access to the whole of the Limousin region, as it is located close to three other departments, the Indre (36) the Vienne (86) and the Creuse (23) The city of Limoges, the departmental capital of the Haute Vienne, is a 30 minute drive away, and has an International airport. Poitiers, a beautiful city to visit, is approximately an hour and a half away, and also has an International airport. Limousin-Cottage is very quietly situated in the heart of the village, by the church. The front of the cottage opens directly onto a small residents courtyard for secure off-road parking. You can safely park directly in front of your door. The rear of the cottage overlooks open countryside, and there are lovely quiet lanes for walking, just a very short distance away. Our guests have free use of the two adult mountain bikes provided, (please provide your own safety helmets) The wildlife is varied, and you can enjoy the birdsong, even during the night when in the Summer we often have a nightingale singing his little heart out. A mile or so along the road is a beautiful lake, Lac de Mondon, with a lovely lakeside open-air swimming pool, with a great little poolside bar restaurant, and an Auberge for formal dining out. From Lac Mondon there are lovely riverside walks through the medieval forest, where you will find a waterfall after rainfall, a prehistoric shelter and the Bridge of Wolves. The river Benaize at this point is called the Boiling Pot, for reasons which will become evident when you see it in full flow.

Limousin-Cottage is also very well situated for easy access to all of the Limousin, and places to visit include Oradour Sur Glane, the martyr town which has been left untouched since virtually the whole population were massacred during WW2. There are also some lovely medieval towns and Chateaux to visit in the region, including the Richard the Lionheart route and the Collegiate at Le Dorat. Limoges is the capital of the Limousin, and renowned for it's porcelain manufacturing. It is a 30 minute drive from Mailhac.

There are also many lakeside beaches where you can swim, enjoy watersports, or take a canoe trip along the river. The Limousin is known as the French Lake District, with many of the lakes having beaches where swimming is allowed.

A car is necessary for a stay at Limousin-Cottage. Limoges airport has Ryanair and Flybe routes from several UK destinations, and the is a TGV fast train station at La Souterraine, only 10 miles from Mailhac sur Benaize.
