Long Pond Waterfront with Dock and Views of Acadia

Mount Desert house

3 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 6

“Tranquil oasis on Long Pond” This little gem is not to be missed. Set back only a short distance to Long Pond, the modern cabin gave us gorgeous lake views, great kayaking each morning and evening, privacy and many quiet moments of sipping a cocktail on the large deck. It is in a great location, a close drive to all the hiking and carriage trails in Acadia NP for the adventurous, yet also close to Bar Harbor for shopping and great food. The owners, Diana and Gary were very helpful with suggestions during our stay. We took them up on recommendations for take-out Lobsters from Trenton bridge, dinner and croquet at Claremont hotel in Southwest Harbor and quite a few of the less traveled hikes in Acadia. We had a great experience at Windiana and look forward to returning next year.

Hillside House/Lakeside Picnic Area for Summer Fun

Stoneham house

3 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 6

“Exactly the getaway we needed!” We booked the house at Flander's Knoll looking for a quiet getaway to escape the craziness of the city and we got what we were looking for and more! We were sold when we saw the pictures of the site but the pictures really don't do it justice...you have to see this place to believe it! The owners were exceptionally helpful and checked in a couple times to make sure everything was ok and that we had everything we needed. They were happy to provide some great recommendations for food/drinks (check out Ebenezer's!) and activities like hiking. My only regret is only booking it for a weekend...I plan on going back for at least a full week next summer. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an escape or needs peace to write/work. It was hard saying goodbye and I can't wait to go back!

“Amazing and relaxing location!” This is a great rental for large groups. Plenty of space/beds throughout the house, and several large common areas. We particularly enjoyed the pool table and hot tub/deck. Also was just a short drive from Sunday River for those looking to ski. Paul provided everything we needed for a great stay, and was quick to respond to any issues that popped up. Would definitely book this house again!

“Fantastic Family Vacation” Our family of 10 celebrated 3 birthdays and our 50th wedding anniversary here from July 3 to July 11, 2015. We could not have found a better place. We rented the "Pavillion" which was perfect for our group. It was clean, well decorated, comfortable beds. and the kitchen was stocked with all the dishware, silverware, pots and pans, and everything needed if we had wanted to cook "in" all the time. ( we chose to eat out except for breakfasts). The "Pavillion" is the largest of a number of units on a pretty complex with a nice pond, fire pits, good landscaping, parking, washer/dryer, etc and ideally located in short walking distance to the shops, market, and restaurants and the best ice cream of Southwest Harbor. It is very quiet and the owners parents ( delightful) live in one of the units on the property. The owner, Marc Chalfoun was extremely cordial and helpful in recommending activities and restaurants for our special occasions. He also responded immediately with extra towels we requested one time and he allowed us to check in a day ahead of our reserved week which was a huge advantage for us. We felt the rate was very reasonable considering the size of the unit, the 4th of July week at the peak of their tourist season, closeness to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and activities that entertained 6 adults and 4 grand children from 3 to 13. WE WOULD ALWAYS STAY HERE IF VISITING THIS BEAUTIFUL AREA OF MAINE. Chuck Raches, Bozeman, MT

“Beautiful home with lots of room and right on the river! Good indoor and outdoor space.” Easy walk to the beach and lobster shack. Close to the forts/park. Great area to walk. Close to everything; outlets, restaurants, etc. Short ride to Portsmouth, NH; Nubble Lighthouse. In other words, a great hub for activity, to go in different directions or just sit and enjoy the river. Owners were very nice to work with. Will visit again!

“Beautiful Historic Home - Rare Family Togetherness Opportunity” There can be no better way to experience a new scenic location than with family! The opportunity to do that, enjoy, and be a part of morning and evening discussions is just not there with a large family in multiple hotel rooms. Compare to that a stay at Willowbrook, right across from scenic Somes Sound. You can watch from the porch as others take pictures of the view. The home is large and charming, has so much history, unique details and qualities that make exploration irresistible. Our daughter had tears in her eyes upon entering the kitchen due to similarities to my Mom's home. Discussions about the home itself were so frequent and made more interesting by the numerous on site publications and books regarding the area and its history. Most of our family of twelve were 18 or older; all enjoyed not only the glimpse of life in the past, but actually living in such a home made it natural to imagine and of course talk about earlier life. Be sure that Willowbrook was an upscale residence from early times and provides a flavor of such a life. In a time frame when many did not have electricity or indoor plumbing, residents here had indoor plumbing. The 1920s era showers had multiple shower heads, which even now are a rarity. The shower controls alone were very advanced for the time and rival or exceed the contemporary in the ability of infinite control of both volume and temperature. Just imagine when these were new and the leading edge of innovation. Be aware that operation of the showers is not at first intuitive, since these controls are early prototypes from which others evolved. Did I mention FOUR bathrooms? Having seven ladies in our group made this so so nice. It is important to note that there was never a shortage of hot water. So. The home itself is a worthwhile experience, but this home is on Mount Desert Island. It is just so trouble free to make excursions to the various Acadia National Park sites, places to enjoy lobster, outdoor activities, and the bustle of Bar Harbor, with possible intermissions to return "home" to Willowbrook. If you seek modern cookie cutter perfection, skip Willowbrook. Our vacation was much more fulfilling because of our stay here.

Great location, walk town around corner 3 park ent

Bar Harbor house

4 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 10

“Convenient and Comfortable property” We really love this rental property because of the convenience to downtown Bar Harbor and the restaurants and shops as well as Acadia Park . Literally, down the hill, make a right and then a left on Cottage street and you're in town. Maybe a minute, tops. Comfortable bedrooms, private lot with new kitchen appliances if you want to cook at home. Acadia Park entrance is a couple of blocks away. You can bike to it and avoid the hill coming up that all the bike rental companies steer you toward. We really enjoyed our stay here and the owner was very responsive with information.

Little Island House Upstairs Appartment

Bass Harbor house

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Best place ever” We were fortunate that someone had to cancel their reservation at the last minute as our schedule unexpectedly opened up. We spent the best week ever in the little seaside fishing village of Bass Harbor, rocked to sleep by the sound of the waves lapping on the shore and awakened by the gentle sound of the fishing boats hauling out to see at the crack of dawn, as the fog gently lifted on the harbor. We stayed in the downstairs unit of Little Island House. We barely ever saw the couple who was staying upstairs. Our host Charlene Strauss was wonderful, both discrete and accommodating and gracious. The house was immaculate. From the bedding and the thick towels to the well-equipped kitchen, the exquisite prints on the walls, the seaside wraparound porch with a direct view on the harbor, the available bbq and the beach chairs that Charlene graciously lent us, everything down to a T was spectacular in its own laid back way. Bass Harbor only gets traffic because it is the point of departure for the little ferry to Swan Island, but we neither saw nor heard any of it from the house. It is such a quiet retreat, far enough away from the crowds of Bar Harbor (30 minute car ride away) and acadia National Park, yet close enough to drive there if so inclined. There are 2 restaurants and 1 take-out place. We also discovered the Ravenswood boutique on McMullan ave, which is definitely worth a visit. The elderly owners, Joe and anne Paradise, who carve birds and sell treasures old and new, are delightful and the new carving of the Yellow Leg that we purchased there reminds me of our wonderful week in Bass Harbor. Crowd lovers please abstain! Thank you Charlene! We hope to come back soon.

Sleep at the water's edge at Whiting Bay B&B

Whiting b&b

4 bedrooms / 3 bathrooms / sleeps 5

“A hidden oasis in upstate Maine.” If you ever find yourself in the Lubec / Whiting areas of Maine you should definitely stay at The Whiting Baby B & B. Brenda, the owner, is a lovely, warm individual that immediately makes you feel welcome and invited. She opened her home and her heart to us for our short stay, invited us to a local Cello concert that was just lovely, and even made us a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies. Thank you, Brenda!

Cow Palace - ocean-front family gathering place near Acadia National Park & Bar

Bar Harbor house

7 bedrooms / 4 bathrooms / sleeps 12

“Great residence, unbelievable coastal frontage, but” I have been to Maine during the summer 3 times. Twice I have stayed at the Cow Palace. The people are good, the location amazing and the house and grounds very, very nice. The residence is large and well stocked with almost anything you might need during your visit. My only problem is one which is common in Northern environments, that is there is no air conditioning. The first time we stayed at the Cow Palace, the weather was great and the heat was not a problem. This last visit however, the heat was abnormal and certain days were miserable within the house. It was almost impossible to take a nap during the day, and despite having the windows open, you sweated during the night, which made sleeping more difficult. My 70 year old mother in law was miserable almost the entire trip. As I said this is not a problem exclusive to the Cow Palace, most residences do not have air conditioning. My first vacationing visit to main was to the Portland area and there was an extraordinary heat wave. We stayed in a hotel, which had no air conditioning, and were miserable. This from someone who lives in central Florida and camps throughout the year. As you can see I still give the Cow Palace 5 stars. If the fluctuating patterns of heat in the North can be an issue for you. I would look into a house with air-conditioning. Since I have been told that excessive heat is rarely a problem, it may be something you do not need to be concerned. I love the house, the family, the location and the amazing outdoor recreation and site seeing opportunities in the area. The only reason I give it a 4 for comfort is again the heat issue.
