The Banyan Tree is 1/2 mile below Makawao town , is close to the airport (Kahului), and the North Shore beaches (6 miles), It is at 1500 ft elevation on the slopes or Haleakala. Stretching from Haiku through Makawao and Pukalani to Kula, Maui's upcountry is a quieter and more temperate side of island life. The unique blend of old time Hawaii weaves through the pineapple plantations, sprawling ranches, pastures, breath taking ocean and island views, jungles and forests that make up the landscape of upcountry Maui. Usually a surprise to first time Maui visitors who often assume that the island is little more than hot sandy beaches and tropical jungle, "Upcountry" Maui is mostly sunny, but will also receive a few minutes of cooling showers most days. The resulting pleasant freshness of upcountry Maui is a secret you'll be pleased to have discovered.
The Banyan Tree Bed and Breakfast has an ideal central location for touring Maui, it is located just down the hill and across a pineapple field from the historic cowboy town and favorite local hangout of Makawao. Shops, restaurants, art galleries, food and health stores, spas, library and more can all be found in this friendly little town. Also 7 miles down the hill from the Banyan B&B is the small, historic sugar mill and beach town of Paia. Internationally famous for the North Shore surfing and windsurfing, Paia town is central to Ho'okipa, Spreklesville and Baldwin beaches.
Haleakala National Park is an hour's drive up the mountain and it is a fantastic place to go for a day of hiking or even just to watch the widely acclaimed sunrises and sunsets! A taste of the old Hawaii can still be found in heavenly Hana; just 2 hours away from our peaceful retreat, down a famous twisting jungle road dotted with breathtaking views, jungles and waterfalls. Another half hour past Hana is the Kipahulu area and the ocean side of Haleakala park The road continues though jungle and then reaches the ocean drive with picturesque mountain vistas above black lava fields You continue back to Makawao town, a 1 1/2 hours drive.
The world renown South Shore Maui beaches start just 30 minutes away. The incomparable Wailea resort area is a 45 minutes drive, while the ever popular Lahaina and Kaanapali beach towns are a 1 hours drive.

Our yoga group was there for one week and the yoga facility was beautiful and had everything we needed including a waterfall just outside. The gardens, the grounds the birds and even cows mooing in the distance all contributed to a feeling of peace and serenity with beauty all around. One night gave us a moonbow around the full moon.
The large, main house and kitchen was perfect for our group of 17 but I would also return on my own to stay in one of the rooms which are equipped to allow simple cooking.
The Banyan B&B; is an easy drive down to any beach area and to other places of interest. Then, it is nice to come home to a quiet, beautiful setting. I really enjoyed walking into and being in Makawao, the small and interesting town nearby.
Marty and his staff were so helpful and attentive which made us feel completely at home and truly on vacation. Thank you Marty.
"Incredible! Generous loving hosts and special place"

My son and I stayed at Sue's Cottage. Two bedrooms and two baths, nice kitchenette, small fridge, table, sofa...everything we needed. Nothing fancy but clean and neat like staying at your favorite aunt's place. Very friendly and helpful staff, nice grounds.
"A beautiful, peaceful, and rejuvinating experience!"

A beautiful home away from home. The main house has a huge kitchen with every ammenity you could want. Laundry machines are available on site. Fresh fruit trees on the property including banana, lemon and grapefruit. Beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers everywhere. Walking distance to town is approx. 10 minutes. Only a 15 minute drive down to the local and beautiful beach. Owner of the Banyan Tree was the most gracious and accommodating host. All in all a truly enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

Developed from a former plantation manager's home, this was a pleasant B&B; with helpful staff. Not on the beach but easy access to sights all over the island with a rental car.
The rooms had tasteful Hawaiian decor. I would have preferred a lot more fresh fruit with the breakfast and maybe something better than an English muffin. They have microwaves & fridges in the rooms. I would suggest they offer guests choices like cup of oatmeal or locally made granola in lieu of muffins just to notch it up. Bananas are growing on the property and free for guests to enjoy.
Lovely yoga space for retreats. Nice touches of art & beautiful flowers around the grounds. Very relaxing.

The Banyan Bed and Breakfast Retreat was all in all a positive experience. Being a yoga instructor (of a the yoga retreat that we took there), I really appreciated their industrial size kitchen, large common areas and beautiful yoga studio complete with all the yoga props you could want for a class. The rooms (including towels) were well serviced and the property was beautiful and well manicured. The only downside to my experience was that we were limited to use the yoga studio until 8:30pm, which I thought for the daily rate we were paying we should've been able to use the space at least until 11pm.
