This charming house is a part of the large estate of La Collina, on the border of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, and has been in the same family for over 400 years. Set on a small ridge of its own, the house looks out towards Tuscany with wonderful views over the ridges of the Apennines. Recently converted, it comfortably sleeps 6 and every bedroom has french windows directly onto the gardens. The old pizza oven has been carefully kept and can be used for cooking real wood-fired oven pizzas. The swimming pool is on a higher level than the house and enjoys the same spectacular views.
The house is built into the side of a hill, so one enters from the upper floor, into the dining room. To the right is a well-equipped kitchen, while on the left is a comfortable living room with a working fireplace. In the far corner of the living room a door leads to a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom. French windows lead to the garden from the double bedroom. A circular staircase in the dining room leads downstairs where there are a further 2 bedrooms, one with ensuite. Both these lower bedrooms also have french windows leading out onto the garden, making the house feel delightfully airy in the summer.
Mazzino, as the other houses on the Collina estate, straddles Tuscany and Emilia Romagna and is an excellent base for visiting the east of Italy; Ravenna with its wonderful Byzantine mosaics or Rimini where one of Alberti's more formal architectural projects, the Tempio Malatestiano, still stands. The Adriatic coast is about an hour away and Faenza, with its rich tradition of ceramics, is within half an hours drive. Bologna, Ancona or Rimini are better airports to fly to than Pisa or Florence though the latter can easily be reached by driving across the mountains to Marradi and taking the train. The Tosco-romagnolo Apennines are a beautiful area in their own right, with hidden villages, delicious restaurants and a wonderful feeling of discovery, as few people visit this area. Cycling, climbing and walking are are well catered for, with some mountain passes climbing up to 1000 metres, between 1600 metre high mountains. Emilia Romagna is the region of good cooking: Tortellini, Parma ham, Parmesan cheese, Bolognese ragu', ravioli are all from this area. Tredozio itself, the small town at the foot of the hill, boasts a Michelin starred restaurant whose chef will come and cook for you in La Collina, a gourmet's dream.
