If you are looking for an elegant and luxurious home in the best location of the historic Centro of Merida at reasonable rents, one block from Parque Santiago, Casa de los Monos is it! On the corner of Calle 57 and Calle 74, this home is in Colonia Santiago, the best residential area in the city. Casa de los Monos is not a 'rental house.' Rather it is a private residence which is occasionally available to a few, responsible people for one month stays. Therefore, the furnishings, linens, art, and appointments are commensurate with what you expect to find in a private, luxury home.
The main floor living room has glass doors opening onto the heated pool. At one end you will find a beautiful tiled and fully equipped kitchen (with powder room) which opens to a lovely dining room with comfortable seating for 8. The other end of the living room opens to a large guest room with two double beds. The elegant and comfortable master bedroom has a queen size bed and opens onto a glassed in sitting room/office going out to the pool. A huge marble bathroom/dressing room connects the two main floor bedrooms. On the second floor is the third bedroom, beautifully decorated with a queen size bed and full bathroom. A balcony overlooks the pool
Two of the greatest Mayan pyramids (Chichen Itza and Uxmal) are within a two hour drive. Cancun and Guatemala are just 4.5 hours away. The lovely beach of Progreso with its beautiful new Malecon is only a 30 minute drive from Merida. Enjoy symphonies, ballets, theater, fine dining, incredible museums, galleries, modern movie theaters, and so much more in this beautiful 'White City' that looks like Paris. Taxis are very reasonable, and the shopping is incredible.
Weekly maid service included. Additional maid/cook service available at extra cost. Of significant importance, Merida has the lowest crime rate in Mexico. A strong police presence is everywhere. This is a very safe and friendly city.
The large exercise lap pool has fountains which flow into it, and the lighting at night is magical. The second floor bedroom will comfortably sleep two in a queen size bed. The other two bedrooms downstairs offer a queen size bed in one and two double beds in the other. All the downstairs rooms enjoy large glass windows and doors facing the pool. The ceilings are 18 feet high. The entire building has separate air conditioning in each room. The water is purified to a high standard and is safe to drink. There also is bottled water.
Come and enjoy one of the most beautiful areas you can imagine, as you relax in a lovely, historical home; enjoy the pool; relax to the music of the built-in stereo sound system; and explore World Heritage sites.

Arriving after dark was no problem for management. The home was immaculate and beautifully decorated. Four queen beds were comfortable and inviting after a long day of travel. The sparkling pool was visible from most rooms in the house, as was the lighted and landscaped patio. Sometimes it was difficult to decide to lounge poolside, in the living room, or in the TV/game room. There were enough spaces to offer refuge from the other members of our party for some quiet reading. My favorite spot for checking email on my laptop or reading, was the upstairs patio/balcony, overlooking the pool/patio, with the sound of running water.
This home has been lovingly updated and upgraded from the time it was built. One of the fun pastimes was to imagine what it was like originally. That was difficult to accomplish sometimes, but all one has to do is look at the surviving hooks in the walls to see where the original inhabitants hung their hammocks...ahh, the tropics without this lovely a/C.
Merida is a built on level ground which makes it easy to walk a few blocks to the center of town, where there are multiple choices for good dining and some shopping. One should not miss the Fine art. Merida, being the state capitol, has world class art even in the Governor's Palace. Nearby, is the Performing art Theater. To learn the most about this charming city, there's an open-air tour bus in this area also. There are so many colonial era churches, I lost count, but hope to return for a chance to concentrate on visiting as many churches as possible. Each one has distinctive personality.
It was a pleasant surprise to have a neighborhood grocery store around the block...and there was a charming pocket park across the street from the store. One of the park benches has my name on it for the return visit.
A small restaurant about 2 blocks from the house, has delicious pizza and a gift shop with some good buys in Mexican handcrafts.
This lovely home is near the top of my must return list!
