Born as a farmstead to meet the agricultural needs of the adjacent villa, Stregone has come of age and now, thanks to the good taste of its owner, the large farmhouse has been transformed into two delightful apartments that offer modern comfort and relaxing elegance. Driving the country road out to Stregone, it would seem city life has been left behind - the narrowing lane dictates a more relaxed pace, the architecture of neighboring villas is softened by flowering hedges that attract butterflies and the air smells of honeysuckle. It is only when you arrive at the house that you appreciate that while you may sit in the country, your eyes travel back to the city - to take in the medieval silhouette of Siena, which sits just across the valley, silent and suggestive of life within the ancient walls. It is a view you can gaze at from the large hillside pool, from the large table under the open pergola and from many of the upper floor windows.
The house is easily accessed either through the entry hall or from the glass french doors in the wide arch facing the entrance patio. The ground floor living area has terracotta flooring and soft tones of blue and sandy gold present in the comfortable wicker and wood furniture. There are three bedroom suites on this level: Pesca, which is off the dining /kitchen area and has a window to the courtyard, Grigia, which is off the living room and Azzurrina, which can be accessed either independently from the main entrance or the Grigia suite, a very handy arrangement for a small family. From a door in the entry hall a stairway leads up into a second luminous living area which has an open fireplace, comfortable sofas and, as in many Tuscan villas, doors leading to several of bedroom suites. Viola, Verde, and Giallina are all off the living area. A hallway between the living and dining rooms lead instead to the Rosa and Lavanda suites, which both have beatiful views of Siena on the horizion.
Each bedroom suite is named for the soft colour of the walls and be it decked in soft olive green, dusky rose, or lavender, in each room the owner has delighted in combining family heirlooms with fine fabrics to created rooms of individual character. One bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and all the others have ensuite shower rooms dressed with marble sinks and generous shower space. While most bedrooms are large and airy, one has a small double bed that might be a bit cosy and best used as a single accommodation. Though bedrooms are soothing retreats, guests will meet for breakfast in the charming dining room a few steps above the living area whose large table is set perfectly to take in the view of Siena.
The grounds of Stregone provide well for buests wishing to lounge outdoors. Across the lawn from the owner's ground floor office apartment is a large pergola, furnished with tables that together can seat 16 and convenient to a summer kitchen with refrigerator and dishwasher. On a slightly lower level of the hillside and set in a verdant lawn, the large swimming pool with an infinity edge has a wonderful view of Siena. Easily reached are those graceful piazzas, winding streets and tempting city shops the horizon suggests, as are the main roads leading to Florence, Arezzo and the Chianti region. The reward for having ventured and visited will be the pleasure at having such a gracious home-away-from-home to return to....Read more
