The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Valencia Province region
Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, is the home of the paella and horchata, has a lively night scene, and is famous throughout Spain for its clothes and furniture designers.
One of the best ways to see it is from the guided hop-on/hop-off buses which tour the city throughout the day.
There is the delightful contrast between its old and new areas. Wander around its little plazas, admire its Baroque facades, visit its museums and its Cathedral, see the futuristic complex of the City of Arts and Sciences, but, above all, relax and enjoy its unique atmosphere. The tourist guide for this compact city has eight short walks each of which can be comfortably undertaken in half a day with plenty of stops for refreshment.
The Oceanographique in the City of Arts and Sciences is highly recommended. “Expensive but well worth the money” is how one guest described it, though the food is dear and of poor quality so you may wish to make your own arrangements in this respect.
You can drive in, catch the bus from Montroy, or take the metro from Torrent or Bon Aire.
Valencia is blessed with a host of beautiful blue flag beaches with a wide selection of restaurants close by. El Saler is a particular favourite of many, but make your own choice. In Malva-Rosa each Saturday night during the season there is a huge firework display at midnight. Families turn up with tables and chairs, picnics and games, and make a night of it either just chatting or visiting the local stalls.
For those who enjoy naturist bathing, there is, again, plenty of choice. Playa del Pinedo is the nearest beach to the south of Valencia (though not the best) where naturist and textile bathing is mixed. El Saler, a blue flag beach with 800 metres of fine golden sand has showers, toilets, red cross vigilance, and easy access, with its naturist section opposite Tower 5. Playa de la Devesa is another blue flag beach to the south of El Saler without its popularity. It has all the quality of that beach - clean, fine sand, dunes, and pure blue water - but is totally undeveloped with no restaurants, stalls, or toilets. You need to take your food and water with you. At the entry point to this beach, turn left for the textile beach and right for the naturist section.
The Montroy area
Festivals are at the heart of Valencian life. There are over 90 listed in the tourist gide for the region.
Renowned throughout Spain, Las Fallas take place in the province from 12 – 19 March. The most famous is in Valencia itself, but there are others throughout the region.
Easter, of course, is a key celebration with processions in various parts of the region and a passion play in Valencia.
The second week in July is the time of the Feria in Valencia with its music – and even more fireworks!
The last Wednesday in August sees the tomatina in Bunol - the biggest tomato fight in the world, whilst November hosts the honey festival in Montroy, and so it goes on throughout the year.
The Formula One Grand Prix of Europe is held around the streets of Valencia's port area. This is one of the most popular Formula 1 races of the calendar.
The MotoGP and the Superbike World Championship takes place at the Ricardo Tourmo Circuit at Cheste, Valencia, in November of each year whilst the World Superbike Championship takes place there in April. This impressive track is less than 20 minutes' drive away from the villa.
The vast lagoon of the Albufera is one of the largest bodies of freshwater in Spain and, as such, attracts tens of thousands of migratory birds – some 250 species of which 90 breed here regularly.
The Aquapark de Cullera is a (email: hidden)raction for all the family. Not cheap but a full day out. The food there is expensive and poor so you are better to take your own and use the money you save to hire your own floats rather than to wait for free ones. You can also save money by booking online in advance.
