Additional Location Information

On the edge of a large village, down a country lane leading only to fields, vineyards and us, with panoramic views of the Gironde estuary, you are guaranteed a peaceful, relaxing holiday. The village is a 10 minute walk and has all the shops you need. Another 5 minutes brings you to the picturesque port, with its yacht marina and restaurants. We are an hour north of Bordeaux, an hour south of La Rochelle, 8 hours from Calais, 4 hours from St Malo. There are excellent beaches around Royan, the nearest being less than 20 minutes drive. a 45 minute drive will take you to La Cote Sauvage - a fantastic, 20km, protected beach and dune area - for advanced beach lovers!
Across the Gironde, which is the largest estuary in Europe, is the Medoc - one of the most famous wine regions in the world. The chateaux of Margaux, Lafite, Latour, Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Leoville and many many more can be found here. You can cross the estuary by ferry from either Blaye or Royan, or just drive there via Bordeaux. There are hundreds of lesser known producers making excellent wine at reasonable prices, so a day spent touring the chateaux can be a good investment as well as highly enjoyable!
The area around the cottage is full of history - from neolithic, Roman and Medieval periods - the amateur historian will find plenty to keep them amused. Our guests have often said that one week is not enough to do justice to the area.
To get the most from your stay, you will need a car or bikes. Public transport is virtually non-existent. The area is a cyclist paradise with very low volume of traffic, lots of idyllic country lanes and many other cyclists to swap stories with.
