On a quiet corner property on a developed street that features widely-spaced homes, tall trees and big, delightful views, stands the original old home on that part of Banner Mountain. Behind a berm that provides privacy and seclusion, the cabin-like exterior opens to wonderful views and a roomy, welcoming retreat.
This remains a comfortable home that is lived in when no guests are in residence, either by the owners or by caretakers. When guests check in, the caretakers are available nearby.
The home is great for 2 or 3 couples, a family, a 'guys/girls weekend' . . . or a retreat, family reunion or wedding party. The dining room could anchor a family get-together, gourmet dinner, meeting of partners or a board planning session.
GROUPS and PARTIES?
Entertain, get memorably married, or hold a party at the property. Our rustic meadow and spacious deck have each accommodated many a party, picnic and celebration. We are flexible, so let's discuss what you have in mind. We require notification, and there may be extra charges, if you expect 20 or more guests.
CLOSE TO CHARM!
It's an easy drive of 10 minutes to either Nevada City or Grass Valley, with fine restaurants, music, theater, shopping, art galleries, historic attractions and recreation.
SKIING and HIKING?
Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing (and warm-weather walking) is available at Washington Ridge recreation area, about a 25-minute drive. For downhill skiing, reach Sugar Bowl and Boreal Ridge in about an hour on good highways. Our house is somewhat below the winter snow line most years; you may easily depart from your snow-free vacation retreat to the snow area. (But we DO get winter snow at times!)
The master bedroom has a king-size bed and the bathroom can be closed off and made private to form a suite.
A second bedroom, with a double bed, is right by another 3/4 bathroom (shower, no tub). A door closes off both the bath and the bedroom from the rest of the house.
The third bedroom has a double bed; it is between the living room and the master bedroom and bathroom. NOTE: This bedroom is not entirely private, as it is the only indoor passage between the master suite and the living/main room. Ask us if you need further clarification!
The roomy deck is so nice to sit out on. We also have a grassy meadow (great for parties, meditation, or romping). It is OK to smoke outside or on the deck.
The fully equipped dining room / kitchen features a big window view and a table that can sit 10 -- and there's room for more if needed. The kitchen has an electric range and oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee grinder and maker, blender, and food processor. Spices, coffee, tea, sugar and other condiments are there for your use. Grocery stores are within 10 minutes' drive. The SPD Grocery Store (locally owned and easy to find) in Nevada City has a fully stocked deli, as does the large Safeway store down the hill at the Brunswick shopping center area.
Dining out is such a treat in Nevada City and Grass Valley, with a variety of wonderful restaurants; just check out the local sites. Local taxi services provide safe transport!
BRING YOUR PET!
Well-trained pets are welcome, but our insurance prohibits us from hosting breeds known for aggression. Be aware that there is no fence -- only strips of forest on the perimeter of the property. Also, there is no pet door.
Deer come and go, and you may well look out and see a big buck staring at you from down on the lawn!
A washer and dryer are available in the utility room.
CHECK-IN, CHECK-OUT TIMES:
. . . are flexible; just let us know what works for you.
This is our family home dating from the 1940's, when Al and Peg Merrill built the core of of a 'log cabin' retreat. Al was born right down the hill in Gold Flat, in 1909. He became a successful Nevada City real estate broker and business leader, while his wife Peg volunteered in the community. Their only son, Mike is now the home's owner, with his wife Maureen. See Al's old office at 312 Broad Street, now the home of Gold Mountain Trading Co., a beautiful store and a great place to shop! Adding to their cabin in unpretentious phases, the Merrills created this charming old-new home with a big-sky view.
A person can get into and around the house in a wheelchair. Assistance may be needed, for some, over the exterior door thresholds. Please inquire.
Please send a message with questions or requests. We are happy to welcome you at an affordable price in a lovely setting that was meant to be shared....Read more

My fourth time staying at this wonderful, serene setting. It is better each time. To me, it's a place for total relaxation, in a quiet-quiet-quiet---and just beautiful setting. One is isolated, which is the good part. But close enough to town for a quick trip for groceries or dinner out. Being in the house is a warm, cozy and safe feeling. Being on the back deck is like being right in wilderness, again with a safe feeling. It's quiet and inspiring place to read, sleep, hike, watch TV, sing, play instruments (good place to jam---no neighbors to bother!), write a book, have one-on-one with the one you love...
