About Osaka

Once simply known as ‘the smaller version of Tokyo’, Osaka has emerged as one of the most exciting destinations in Japan. With a mesmerizing combination of bright and bold metropolis and historical splendor, there is plenty to keep you occupied.

Known as the city that ‘bankrupts’ people through food, it’s the perfect travel destination for gastronomical adventurers.

With plenty of options on FlipKey, Osaka is the perfect place to base yourself and get lost in culinary and cultural genius. Even better, it’s just a hop and a skip away from Kyoto, the beautiful cultural former capital of Japan.

About Osaka

Found in the Kansai region of Japan, Osaka is uniquely placed amongst intriguing neighbors. Whilst Osaka itself is known as a hive of economic activity and the ‘nation’s kitchen’, it’s also close to Nara, a treasure hove of historical temples and shrines, and Kyoto the city of traditional culture and academic study.

But that’s not to say that Osaka itself isn’t seeped in historical culture, in fact humans have been there for more than 10,000 years! It has a diverse past, which you can explore by visiting one of the many museums.

Osaka may have a population of nearly 3 million, but it’s famous for its local, small town charm. Expect lots of smiling faces in Osaka, they know how to make guests welcome! Osaka is an excellent example of a city which has managed to hold on to its traditional attitudes, whilst turning into a cosmopolitan metropolis.

What to do in Osaka

We know we’ve mentioned it a few times already, but Osaka really is all about the food! Make sure you try their quintessential street snack, takoyaki, which is fried octopus fritters on a stick. Trust us, they are far more delicious than they sound!

In the gastronomical wonderland that is Osaka, it’s forgivable to plan an itinerary around what you’re eating next.

If you want a real taste of Japan, head to Kuromon Ichiba Market. Otherwise known as the ‘kitchen of the Nation’s Kitchen’, it’s where all of the top chefs in Osaka source their produce. Speaking of top chefs, Osaka has an impressive 91 restaurants with a Michelin star! Kuromon Ichiba Market has everything you can think of, scallops served with a knob of butter and a drizzle of soy sauce, baby octopuses stuffed with quail eggs, and even Kobe beef! All served from tiny makeshift grills and served in a paper napkin. Delicious!

Once you’re finally full, we recommend a cycle tour around the city, to make sure you cover all of its fascinating sites. Or, if you want to take a break, a walk around Osaka castle’s grounds and parks is equally exciting.

Top travel tips

We recommend visiting Osaka in the spring or fall, as the streets are less crowded, and you’ll get to see the beautiful cherry blossom or crisp red leaves.

To really feel like a local, browse and book an Osaka vacation rental on FlipKey.
