Dalavich is a delightful village with shop, church and cafe on the western banks of Loch Awe, 30 miles inland from Oban. Inverliever Forest is close by with forest walks, cycle routes and nature trails where red squirrel, pine marten, osprey and golden eagles can regularly be seen, or meander up to Otter Point and Avich Falls. Loch Awe is the third largest freshwater loch in Scotland and some of the largest trout in Europe have been caught right here, salmon pass through the loch travelling from the River Awe to the River Orchy and the loch is home to several ruined castles on islands, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, Kilchurn Castle, can be found at the northern end of the loch.
The Old School as the name suggests was formerly the village school but now provides comfortable accommodation for groups or families in one of the four apartments. Each named after a traditional school subject, the apartments are furnished and equipped to a high standard in an area of peace and tranquillity. The village, approached over 14 miles of single lane road with stunning scenery all the way, is the perfect base for those wanting to escape city life, you can walk or cycle for miles in any direction before coming across a shop, pub, restaurant or another human being.

This is the fifth year we have spent in the apartments at the Old School in Dalavich to pursue our enjoyment of fishing and hill walking (and to chill). We are always made very welcome and nothing is too much trouble.
The apartments are bright, airy and comfortable. The village of Dalavich is on the shores of Loch awe, at the end of a single track road which provides some of the most beautiful views going. It is a great base for fishing, walking and cycling and is within easy access of the rest of argyll. We have had close encounters with deer and red squirrels, not to mention the odd sheep. This year it was lovely to hear the cuckoo when we were out walking and fishing at Loch a' Mhinn, a small loch in the hills near Kilmelford.
In the village itself there is a café/shop and a Community Centre which runs a very friendly pub. During the holiday season, meals are available 4 nights a week, which we can highly recommend. There is also a grocer shop in Taynuilt where the staff are very friendly and helpful (they also stock some very nice whiskies :))
The big draw for us is the gentle pace and peace and quiet of Dalavich and the friendships we have made over the years. It is a welcome change from the usual hustle and bustle of 'normal' life. The batteries are most definitely recharged.
