my wife and i would like to write an honest review of afterglow villa
PROS: great view, private beach, private pool, private hot tub, private....security, housekeeping, laundry, grounds keeping.
the house was very large and all the bedrooms had a bathroom.
the beach is right next door to sandals
very good views
CONS: the kitchen has a small fridge that wont hold a weeks worth of food and barley keeps the food cold (after a couple days)
NOW THIS IS WHERE THIS GETS BAD.
the cook, aldine; took us to do the shopping with her as im a chef and wanted to see all that jamaica has to offer by way of food. she took us to a meat market and she had 500 jamaican dollars out and asked for bacon pieces and 2 bags of chicken parts. then at the end the cashier asked aldine if it was together or seperate because initially she asked for the bacon pieces to be on a seperate order. however, at the end she replied to the cashier and said "all together." that was clue number1. also, i gave aldine the lunch off and bought pizza for my wife and i and all of the staff.
after a few days my wife and i had time to discuss the situation as we had felt that the experience was not as described in a few areas. mainly the kitchen.
we was finding that we were getting served leftovers for lunch daily. i as a chef thought to myself why? i bought over $800.00 american money in groceries. i asked my wife to do an inventory of the meat we had. this is on day 5 of 8. she came back with tons of meat and food in there. we started throwing away our leftovers and we would find them in the deep freezer in a bag, after sitting out all night and some of the day in hot weather. on day 5 the chicken parts with bones in it that we had watched closely in the deep freeze was now gone when aldine left. yet the only thing we had that day that had chicken in it was chicken tacos that were made out of last nights jerk chicken.
after we talked we decided to investigate further. i had my wife go and ask aldine for the reciepts, so i could see what was bought and what was not there.
to our surprise we had found several things wrong. we were missing many things that were not in the kitchen as we searched it very well. we were missing bottled water, okra, oranges, and veriety of meats. we was also missing the reciept for the meat. i had went in the kitchen and personal went through everything but a green bag on the table that looked like a purse so i didnt wanna look in personal property. but i had to look, when i did i found the meat reciept on the top and didnt need to look further, however i noticed all previous guests reciepts were in there. nothing but reciepts in that bag.we spoke to devon about the sitiuation to try and get some help maybe understanding this. we asked him about the items. one of the items was called an easter bun. we asked him what it was and where nit was at. he said on the fridge so i went to look and see. it was there and over half gone. when we asked him about it he said "aldine and lynette were eating it daily(i dont think he knew it was ours or thought we had maybe gave it to them) but either way we tried it and it was fantastic. best desert we had since we had been there and it was 2/3 gone.
on the reciept it had the proof i needed. i looked at the reciept and it showed the chicken parts and bacon pieces(i placed on special orders no bone in chicken so she knew ahead of time and we told her bfor we went to the meat market thats why i paid special attention to the conversation) i called donna and latoya to let them know of the situation. latoya came and seen us that morning and we showed her the reciepts. and talked to her a little bit about the experience and what we seen. we asked latoya not to talk to her until we left as we didnt want our food to be possibly messed with out of anger. latoya agreed.
the last night we had done steak and ribs as our meal. we watched closely that day to see what was going on. when dinner was done aldine and her son put away dinner and left. we then went to the kitchen with the security guy and devon, we couldnt find the left over steak and ribs. it was not in the fridge, freezer, or deep freeze. we had a 3 pack of charizo sausages that was in the freezer as well and was that afternoon, but after aldine left the sausages were gone. so i made our breakfast list for the morning. steak and eggs with charizo and oatmeal. when aldine came in my wife told hger about breakfast. aldine pulled out the steaks from her bag that were wrapped up in foil. they were never at the house. she took it home with her and brought it back. my wife told her we didnt want the steak just the sausages and the rest of breakfast. she told my wife she thinks i threw out the charizo sausages. my wife told her no, we seen the sausages in the freezer that afternoon, along with devon.
aldine had spoken to my wife about the tip. she wanted $200 usa. this didnt happen on just one occasion but on several. my wife should not be harrassed about how much gratuity we are giving her, not on her bday week.
we want to book again because we love the property but we will not come back again as long as aldine is there. i also was told by a nameless personb(as i dont want anyone to get into trouble) but we was told that this was not the first time this same thing has happened. i dont guess it made it to the property manager, i couldnt see the property manager allowing this to go on.
this property is the best i have been to in jamaica but you have to get rid of the cook.

Our stay at afterglow exceeded all of our expectations. The house is beautiful. The views are incredible. The food is out of this world. The private beach area and surrounding landscape turned out to be the perfect playground for me, my wife and our 3 teenagers. It's a couple of miles walk to downtown Ocho Rios or there are unlimited cabbies wanting to give you a lift. There is a handy gas station/mini mart right across the street. The outdoor dining area provides breathtaking sunset views during dinner. I can't stress enough how marvelous the food was prepared by aldine. She helped us choose a weeks worth of truly authentic Jamaican fare including oxtail, curry goat, breadfruit, jerk chicken, snapper, ribs, pork chops, meatloaf and so much more. The mac and cheese was to die for. I could go on and on about the food. Best of all we didn't have to lift a finger to prepare it or clean it up. At the private beach you can see Sandals to the left and the Jamaica Inn to the right. They do not intrude on your privacy at all. Don't worry about booking any snorkeling, fishing or jet skis. Local entrepreneurs cruise the area in their boats looking for customers and you can negotiate the prices with them. The foliage at the house is beautiful and Devin does a great job keeping it looking great. He's also a great guy to hang out with and learn about Jamaica. Steppa the security guard is great too. The bedrooms have great aC units that will get your room as cold as you like. There are 4 nice TVs in the house. The music system was probably the only negative. I would recommend some sort of speaker you can play from your iPod or other mobile device. One more handy piece of advice: bring lots of cash. Tipping starts as soon as you get off the plane and using credit cards is a pain just about anywhere in Jamaica not to mention the foreign exchange fees the CC companies hit you with. It's really "no problem". Afterglow = 5 Star in my book.

Afterglow was was truly amazing. It was such a beautiful place, and the food (thanks to our great chef) was absolutely wonderful - some of the best meals we\'ve ever eaten. We kept pinching ourselves that we got to live like royalty for a week in such a wonderful place. We also had a great time seeing the sights of Ocho Rios with our driver. I definitely recommend people check out my favorite spot - the Cranbrook Botanical Gardens. The tour was great, and the grounds are just beautiful. The best part was the swim at the end of the tour, where the cold spring water drops several hundred feet into a little swimming hole. Very refreshing! Also my wife loved the horseback ride on the beach at Chukka Cove.
