'The Wharf Hub' offers comfortable homelike facilities and a feeling of traveling back in time. The antiques in the home are all useable. Staying here is also to be taken into the future.
Our web site based slide show themed 'Back in the Future' explores our picks for future living trends. But we aren't just into talking about things, we invite you to stay, explore it and see what you think.
Associated with 'The Wharf Hub' is REAF, the base to New Zealand's only Community Reef building effort. This is about working as a true partner with nature to enhance marine life. (sea ranching) It incorporates Maori cultural perspectives.
'The Wharf Hub' villa itself has a range of bedrooms and sleeping options, including an old launch boat, ( out time travel machine) that can cater for individuals or small groups.
Our price includes not just a continental breakfast but also use of recreational kayaks, mountain bikes, binoculars and fishing gear. All useful in exploring the area.
'The Wharf Hub' itself is nearly 100 years old and we aim to keep its original character.
Beds are made up ready for you. The large home provides full facilities for your stay. A simply equipped kitchen, laundry, dining, wifi, books, video and HD TV all go to make your stay easy and comfortable.
The Master's Room overlooks the rivers and out to sea and has a queen bed and period furniture. The Upper Deck room can accommodate up to 4 people in single beds, The Sunny Oak room has a double bed and Below Decks with its original wood paneling can also sleep 4. The boat house and boat can sleep 4. So there's many ways we can accommodate you or your group.
There's many other unique local activities right on hand. Right outside 'The Wharf Hub' is a free water park offering excellent fun and river swimming. You can catch fish in the river, cycle 10 km on the Motu Trails sand dunes trail section starting out front, help build a reef, go whale watching, star gazing, kayaking, beach walking and more to see and do all from 'The Wharf Hub'.
You can just use 'The Wharf Hub' as your East Coast base to explore the many unique things and heritage of the area - or just relax and do little.
Being by the wharf we specialize in marine and river activities. We offer complimentary marine and NZ themed videos and encourage you to think about taking one of our own unique Marine Life Tours or REAF workshops.
Set your own agenda depending on weather and your inclinations. We have the gear, directions and support for you make the most of your stay in Opotiki.
Many who stay here at 'The Wharf Hub' use it as a base to go out and explore the isolated and very picturesque East Cape area and Waioeka Gorge (NZ's longest), or take day trips to Whakatane, Rotorua and the active offshore volcanic White Island.
The Wharf Hub makes for a great place to come back, refresh, enjoy the evening. There's opportunity to share your experiences with others and learn about the other 'must see or do' things in the area.
The house has simple yet clean and comfortable furnishings. We are more functional than flashy (the house was built in 1922 when rivers were our roads.)
If you come by bus to Opotiki give us a call and we will pick you up and drop you off at the end of your stay. (Complimentary of course) There is no public transport, not even a taxi in Opotiki as everything is within walking distance.
Opotiki is a picturesque town by the coast but accounted as a poorer socio economic town. Just staying here helps make a difference and getting involved with our fisheries enhancement project will help build health and wealth for the people.
An original Shacklock Orion wood stove is installed. Experience authentic wood stove cooking. The meals (and pizzas) it can cook are superb.
Most of the year 'The Wharf Hub' is very peaceful, and is close enough to hear, glimpse and smell the sea. The front sun downer veranda is ideal for relaxed enjoyment of evening sunsets and watching the night sky.
The home overlooks the historic Opotiki Wharf which is where you can join locals in catching a sea trout (kahawai) fish for dinner or whitebait from Sept to Dec. There is an excellent two lane concrete boating ramp here too if you have your own boat. There's plenty of parking space on the property.
Being so close to the Opotiki CBD allows you to leave your car at home and take a 5 minute walk to bars, great restaurants, Museum, and explore the historic Opotiki Township on foot.
