An elevated cabana of mainly native materials like thatch and sticks overlooking the Rio Hondo. It is decorated with Mayan and Nature art and has lights, flush toilet, shower, and shared kitchen. A canoe is available and it is within walking distance of cenotas. It is in a safe and quint village of 500 people with no bars or discos. Excellent for those wishing to slow down, write a book, paint, or learn the culture.

Additional Location Information

There are two rooms for rent but only one is listed. The cabana is next to and is owned by the Jones family. Jose is a night watchman so he built the cabana so he could make extra money to send his four kids to school. The village is small, 500 residents including children so it is easy to walk around and talk to the people, most of whom speak English. You will see tiny kids to turkeys in the streets and wake up to roosters calling. It is very safe here even after dark. There is the river where you can fish and canoe, cenota for swimming, back roads through cane fields, pastures, and jungle to ride bikes or walk, visit the Mennonites, birdwatching, etc. There are no bars or discos. It is ideal to come to relax, take it easy, get to know the people, photograph, paint, write, and catch up on your sleep. .We are on Albion Island that is surrounded by the Rio Hondo. Google Albion Island for research papers on Mayan explorations here. There is a direct bus from the bus terminal in Belize City weekdays leaving at 5 pm. Otherwise take a bus north to Orange Walk, walk 3 blocks to the local station by the market and take the Albion or Alamilla bus going to Santa Cruz. Get off after passing over the river, cross the road, walk three blocks to the cabana. The bus leaves about every 1 1/2 hours, last one at 5 pm and none on Sundays or holidays. Excursions can go to the Lamanai Mayan Ruins that are probably the best ruins to enjoy in Belize. You can climb the pyramids unlike in Mexico where it is prohibited. Orange walk is about 30 minutes by bus. Mexico is 3 miles and can be seen by crossing the river by boat.
