Additional Location Information

Cortijo Romero is a lovingly restored, fully furnished, self catering farmhouse, with exclusive use of a small private pool, in the heart of the stunning unspoilt countryside of rural inland Andalucia in Southern Spain.Set on the edge of the small village of Venta Micena, near Orce in the province of Granada and with far reaching, uninterrupted views to the mountains, the house is in a beautiful location. It is a place for total peace and relaxation, with just the sound of the birds and the bells of occasional passing sheep .
The area around Fuente Nueva, Venta Micena & Orce is becoming world famous as a site for archaeological discoveries. Each year students from around the world come to dig and to uncover the region's fascinating pre-history.There is a Moorish castle in Orce and a palace close by houses remains from nearby archaeological digs. Each town celebrates fiestas throughout the year. Orce's main ones are in January (San Anton y San Sebastian) and August (verano cultural).
In Orce there is a large free spring fed swimming pool with bars where you can swim with the fish.
Lake beaches at San Clemente are 40 minutes drive away, Negratin is a little further. The nearest sea beaches are 1 1/4 hours drive away at Aguilas.
Venta Micena has a summer bar within walking distance. Orce has 2 banks, 2 small supermarkets, butchers, fish shop, green grocer and a good selection of bars/restaurants. Orce has a weekly market on Tuesdays and there is a market everyday somewhere within driving distance
The historic city of Granada is around one & a half hours drive away. Well worth a visit for its elegant squares & winding streets, Granada also boasts the world famous Alhambra, with its wonderfully preserved palace and the beautiful gardens. Above the city is the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada.
Less than half an hour away from the cave-house the dramatically sited castle at Velez Blanco has splendid views, and all the towns in the region offer street cafes and bars to sit and watch the world go by.
One of the most dramatic walks in the area is at Castril, just west of Huescar. A pathway has been cut through the gorge of the Rio Castril, part of it in a tunnel, and part clinging to the sheer sides of the cliff with the river tumbling beneath. A bar in a lovely wooded setting at the end of the walk rewards you for your efforts.
The Sierra de Maria, 12 kilometres from the cave house, is a large forested natural park with signed walks and picnic areas (one of which, La Piza, has a bar) and with dramatic mountain vistas. Leaflets and maps can be found in the house, including details of the botanic garden (free entry) near the village of Maria itself.
