49 Steps 2 - The ♥ of Mission Beach!

Accept no substitutes and don't be fooled by imitations -- our original 99 STEPS and now 99 STEPS 2! We are experienced world travelers, positively-reviewed hosts and guests on Airbnb. This is an upstairs apartment, identical in quality to the original 99. It's NOT your grandma's vacation rental!

From your front door it is 99 steps to the water -- the Pacific Ocean or San Juan Cove, Mission Bay -- your choice! Your starting point is an air conditioned 2nd floor apartment with a private entrance and your own balcony with table and chairs, right outside your door for people watching, catching a breeze, or enjoying Sea World's nightly fireworks ...Read more

Additional Location Information

A walk or run one mile south along the beach will take you to Belmont Park as well as restaurants, bars, coffeehouses, shops and great people watching. Most of the action in Mission Beach is centered here at the intersection of Mission Blvd. and West Mission Bay Drive where you can ride the historic Giant Dipper roller coaster, or rent a set of rollerblades to ride up and down the boardwalk. This is where all walks of life all go out for a walk, a ride, a roll, a stroll, a surf, a beer or a bite to eat - or simply to watch other people out doing their thing. Heading north, and much closer, is Crystal Pier, one of the top piers in the state . Crystal Pier is also one of the best piers for at least four species of fish: barred surfperch, walleye surfperch, shovelnose guitarfish and California halibut. It is also seasonally good for yellowfin croaker, queenfish, and gray smoothhound shark (sand shark). The pier is located on a long, sandy beach.

For a more serene experience, you are just across the street - one block - from the tranquil San Juan Cove/Mission Bayfront. Take a stroll while watching the sail boats go by or try something new, like a stand up paddle board lesson, canoeing or water propulsion jetpack! Nearby is the Bahia Resort, where you can hop on the Bahia Belle, one of the oldest paddle wheeler boats on Mission Bay, and ride it to The Catamaran for dinner. Kids LOVE riding the Bahia Belle. The Belle runs on Fri & Sat starting at 6:30 pm and goes until midnight.

We are a short bike ride/drive (2.8 mi.) - to Sea World, the famous San Diego Zoo (10 mi.) or Balboa Park ( 9 mi.), which has 17 museums, beautiful gardens, and performing arts venues. We are also close to the airport, the sea lions at La Jolla Cove, and the downtown Gaslamp area. A bus on Mission Boulevard will take you to Old Town Transit Center where you can connect with other buses, trains and trolleys for further exploring of America's Finest City and beyond.

While some may compare Mission Beach to the East Coast’s Atlantic City and Coney Island, there is a unique Southern California vibe you can’t find anywhere else here. Nestled between Pacific Beach on the north side, and Belmont Park on its southern side, Mission Beach offers a lively and robust variety of activities in the sun, surf and sand. From hot dog stands to fine dining eateries, hot night clubs to street performers, expect to find all kinds of free-spirited beach goers in a fun, carnival-like atmosphere along the sandy shores. ALL walking distance from this apartment.

South Mission Beach offers a slower pace from the lively activity in the Belmont Park area. There are some great spots for fishing at the end of the road at South Mission Beach Park, where you can cast off the jetty and watch the boats pass in and out through the Harbor Channel. You'd never know it to look, but a half-mile off the coast are a series of shipwrecks, placed here to create an artificial reef and a diver's haven for underwater exploration.
