Great location, nice views, cozy fireplace and soft beds.

The service was unusually nice, although we wish that the free aquarium tickets (now being shown above) were available to us when we were there last month, since they're quite expensive. The location is sensational, about a block from the water and easy walking distance to the aquarium and the Cannery Row stores and restaurants. We had a lovely multigenerational family trip, despite three days of rain. The main floor and fireplace were so welcoming. We had a fire going every day it rained. The living room view was charming, and the living room couch, which seats three, was everyone's favorite spot. The living room futon, however, is too low and is uncomfortable for both sitting and for sleeping. It needs to be replaced, as do the mattresses in the master bedroom and one other. The beds were uncomfortable for 4 of the 6 adults. The wi-fi barely works. Peet's coffee nearby in Monterey and the hotel down the street have reliable and rapid wi-fi service if needed.

About the house:
We reserved this home for a group of 6, staying 4 nights. We were surprised that it was a duplex. The neighbor renters were very loud for the bedroom on the first level that was underneath that side.
The pictures on the website are spatially deceiving, but it was decorated accordingly and fully set up for our group which was nice.
The downstairs shower drain was clogged and about 4 inches of standing water collected during the very first shower. The water went down eventually but would build back up during every shower and, with 4 people using it, it can get quite gross.
The kitchen was good except that there was not a decent spatula to cook with and no pepper shaker that we could find. The cookware in general could use an update but there were plenty of dishes for our group.
There are tons of little white labels all over the house with directions...I'll admit that in a few instances these were helpful but also made it very hard to relax and feel at "home". Those notes could also live in a nice binder that is clearly labeled/divided.
The location of the house is great and the walkway to the ocean is so close! There is a public beach only a couple blocks away and Cannery Row is really close as well.
There were spa passes for people to use but our group was coming for activities so we would have appreciated the option for aquarium passes instead.
The staff that we did encounter were pleasant and accommodating, even letting in one of the guests early to use the facilities. They also allowed for some friends, not staying with us, to put a gift in our unit.
The staff called to alert us that strong winds had blown the rain tarp partly off the roof but it would be fixed the next day and assured us that everything was OK.
Overall, the house worked for our sleeping needs but we were expecting more for the cost. We would consider Sanctuary Rentals for upcoming travel but would most likely not choose this specific house again. Read more
We really thank this guest for taking the time to post this detailed review. We are glad to report as a follow up that once we heard they were having troubles with the shower, we were able to have it fixed the same day while they were out sight-seeing. It is our policy to care for such matters as quickly as possible and with as little inconvenience to our guests as possible. It is regrettable, but there are occasional plumbing issues in any home and we set about righting them as soon as possible if they should arise during a guest stay.
Somehow the six small pepper shakers that are in the home were not found during their stay, but this guest was right - we needed to replace spatulas! We have since repopulated the spatula count!
While many of our guests found our little labels and signs very helpful, some did not, so we have greatly reduced the number of signs in all of our homes. There is a Welcome Book with helpful information about operating instructions that is accessible to every guest and we find this to be sufficient, not to mention access to the House Manager/Concierge to answer additional questions or to care for any issues.
It is our policy that our reservations staff fully inform potential guests that this is a duplex. Noise is rarely an issue. Both units are Sanctuary Vacation Rentals homes, so we are confident that if a noise issue is reported that it will be cared for promptly.
We are glad to hear this guest was ultimately content, but we really set out to exceed expectations. When a guest is not 100% satisfied, we invite them to contact us during their stay if remotely possible, so we may find a way to satisfy them and care for their needs.
With thanks and wishing all happy travels,
Sanctuary Vacation Rentals Staff

I booked this house for my groomsmen for my wedding last month. I stayed with my family right next door, but frequently hung out with my groomsmen in their house. They loved staying here. Both properties are similarly well-appointed, the house is comfortable and spacious and the view is great. The location is great as you're just steps from Cannery Row and also very close to Pebble Beach. The ocean-side walking path is literally out the front door.
This unit provided our extended family a wonderful chance to reb

This home is lovely, very functional, and perfectly located for a family of walkers. The view is fantastic and the amenities are exceptional. The check in process was easy and the wine and cheese provided a great welcoming touch.
There is not one thing to be desired and we plan to return again for another reunion. Thank you. Dinah Naske. Fairbanks alaska

We so enjoyed our stay! There were three couples and there was ample room and the house was beautifully decorated and well supplied. There was also a information about the area in the house which is always so helpful.
We came to do the 21 mile walk of the Big Sur Marathon so to be able to relax after and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean from the balcony or living room was wonderful.
The lay out of the home was perfect and everyone felt they had privacy.
The house is very close to the walking paths by the ocean and we were able to walk down and see the harbour seals or walk to Cannery Row a short distance away.
This is an amazing home in an amazing location!

The house was very elegant while still feeling cozy and comfortable. We had two small children with us so we did have to do a little child proofing but after that was done the layout worked well for all of us. Sitting on the decks was one of our favorites spots. The views were inspiring. The location was really convenient and allowed us to walk to most of our destinations. The kitchen was well stocked and fun to cook in. It was hard to leave such a beautiful place.

The home was very comfortable. Plenty of room and the view of the ocean was beautiful. The location was very good for walking every where. The issue was when watching the TV there was humming, and a line through the TV, in the family room. Also, the same TV, DVR, did not work for recording. One last item was check out time was too early. We did not realize the time until we arrived.

Words cannot really describe how wonderful this house is. The location is terrific and easy walking distance to the aquarium and the local shops, and the coastal pathway is just over the road. I loved the fact that you could see sea otters and seals from the upstairs windows. The house was well stocked with glassware, crockery and cutlery and we found everything we needed. The welcome bottle of wine and the cheese that were left was a lovely touch. The beds were extremely comfortable and the house was spacious enough to cater for 3 couples. It was very pleasantly furnished and the dining table looked so beautiful when we arrived, we didn't want to disturb it. If you choose to stay here, you will not be disappointed. As a footnote, they no longer require you to strip the beds when you leave.

While this rental is a bit pricey, you can't beat the location if you are interested in visiting the Monterey aquarium. Also the ocean view from the living and dining rooms is very nice. The home has modern appliances and is especially nice if you have small children since a stroller and highchair are available. The rental agent will pick up and return a crib rental if necessary. When we thought we might have to check out later than 10 am, the cleaning crew was willing to accommodate a later departure. The only thing we found less than optimal was the lack of a yard and the requirement that we strip the beds and place all linen and towels in the laundry room. However, a welcome bottle of Merlot provided a nice touch.

This place was so nice. The view of the ocean was breathtaking and you can see it from the "wall" of windows in the living room/dining/kitchen area. The house was very clean and felt cozy. We liked that two of the bedrooms were downstairs with the master upstairs since it helped to provide more space and privacy with two families.
They provided nice welcoming touches with the wine and cheese and the two aquarium passes. It's in the perfect location - just a few minutes walk to the Monterey Bay aquarium and shops. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

This place is fantastic. Super clean & cozy with beautiful views of the ocean. It is a 2 minute walk to cannery row, and gorgeous paths along the water. The bedrooms are very comfortable and the kitchen/dining/living room were perfect for us to spend evenings in & cook. I would highly recommend to friends & family.

We have been visiting the Monterey Peninsula for years and this year decided to try Sanctuary Vacation Rentals. While all previous experiences have been good, SVR was exceptional. From the time we viewed the property on-line to the reservation process, to our actual stay, everything was handled professionally and smoothly. There were no glitches.
The home was beautiful - decor, convenience, and comfort. Truly like being in 'our home away from home'. The kitchen is beautifully appointed, the bed was very comfortable, the technology worked perfectly, and the views of the bay while having breakfast and dinner were wonderful. And, most importantly, everything was clean and inviting!
When in PG, we like to visit local restaurants, walk along Lighthouse avenue and Ocean View Boulevard, and, generally, just loaf. We look forward to our next visit with SVR when in Pacific Grove.

We stayed here for six days in November 2011, a family of four with two children aged 10 and 8. It is in a fantastic position, about 30 metres to the main walk/bike trail along Monterey's and Pacific Grove's waterfront, an easy walk to the Monterey aquarium, cafes and shops. It is a couple of blocks to the supermarket, so you really don't need a car to stay here (although not that easy to get to by public transport).
The local area is lovely, with the bike/walking trail going a long way through Monterey. I saw sea otters most mornings I went jogging, there are harbour seals about 100metres away, and sea lions at Fisherman's wharf. You can hire bikes at several places along the trail, and ride a long way along the coast, which is a very enjoyable way to see the area.
The house itself is lovely, with a view out over the water, a comfortable and carefully decorated living/dining/kitchen space and three good sized bedrooms, with two great bathrooms. The kitchen is very well equipped, with everything you could possibly want to cook a gourmet meal.
It was possibly a little too carefully decorated for our family. With two boys aged 10 and 8 we always felt we were walking on eggshells, not helped by the little signs in many places reminding us of the house rules. The house looked absolutely lovely when we walked in, but it wasn't as homey as some other less lovely places we have stayed in where we could let our boys wrestle on the couch.

This property was awesome...clean, comfortable, had everything you could possibly want or need. There were six females which included two over 80 years of age. They shared the master bedroom on the main floor since the stairs were a little much for them, the other four shared the two rooms on the lower floor and we had our own bathroom. It was so welcoming to enter the property on our first day and find a bottle of wine and cheese/crackers waiting for us! Very good location to walk to the water, over to Cannery Row and to the walking trails along the ocean. We had our own transportation and we found our way around very easily. I would recommend seeing the bagpiper on the golf course at the Inn at Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach and taking the Wine Trolley Tour from Monterey to Carmel Valley...what a hoot!
There was a seagull who took a liking to us every day and would perch on the railing outside the dining room or living room small deck, it was o.k. to keep the doors open as long as you didn't feed him he would just watch from afar. Quiet neighborhood, but friendly. I would recommend this home to anyone.

The place worked out perfectly for our group. My wife and I stayed all 9 nights. My mom and friend stayed 7 nights. It worked out perfectly to have 3 bedrooms. I was a little worried about the stairs as my mom is 86 and her friend was in the lower 80's and stayed downstairs. They managed the steps great.
It was an added treat having access to the bike in the garage. I rode the 17 Mile Dr 3 different times. What an awesome ride as it's both scenic and challenging. I've completed 8 Ironman Triathlons so to have a road like that with minimal traffic was sure a treat.
We never did use the grill. If we had a larger balcony we probably would of cooked out several times.
The location was terrific.
It certainly cost more than we usually spend for lodging. Incomes in Iowa are much lower than in California. In case this is the last trip I'm able to bring my mom I wanted to make sure it was some thing special. Given the fact my mom had a great time helped make me feel better about the cost. Also staying for 9 nights you want some thing special. The first night we did not get to the house until10:00pm or so we were not able to get the full value that night.
Overall I'm thrilled that we chose your property. The added perk of the bike plus the aquarium passes (it was a special treat that someone dropped off 2 extra passes so all four of us could go together). My wife and I even went to the Spa once.
I could see coming back and doing the Big Sur marathon again. I'm trying to run a marathon in all 50 states (only 11 to go). Hope to be done in 3 years. Once completed I'd like to go back to some of the neat places I've visited while trying to complete my goal. The Monterey area is certainly one area that I'll come back to visit.
Thanks again for helping to make our stay so special.

My family had a fantastic time in the Monetery area and this house was a large part of why it was so amazing. Being so close to the water and seeing the waves crashing over the rocks and all the marine life from the balcony and windows was an incredible treat. We saw numerous seals, sea otters, and hundreds of dolphins - all from the house! Nothing like making breakfast in a wonderfully equipped kitchen while watching a large pod of dolphins traverse across the bay. We walked to the aquarium just about every day and the guest passes were a nice bonus. The coastal trail was great to walk everyday and along with the natural scenery, we were pleased to see hundereds of seals sleeping/playing on the beach (about 100 yds from the house). Since we were a family, we did most of our eating in house (everything you need is included), but we did manage to escape out for food some. We enjoyed Thai Bistro II, Vivolo's Chowder House, and even the Cannery Row Brewing Company (walked to them all). We got morning pastries at Pavel's (very short drive) and everything we tried was to die for. We're hoping to return to visit the Monterey area again next year. Sanctuary by the Sea will be first on our list!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share.
Best, Annee and David

Our stay was absolutely delightful. In fact, we were able to extend our stay because we liked it so much. Everything is included...we enjoyed the fireplace on cool nights and a nice welcoming touch - a bottle of wine and delicious appetizer. Annee was helpful in helping us feel right at home. You won't be disappointed
