Modern architectural gem on Hawaii's Puna coast

Hale ‘Ohai is on the Big Island’s east coast, 40 miles south of Hilo, and 10 miles north of where the lava is now flowing in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The house is a modern architectural gem designed by award winning architect Craig Steely (Craig calls it Lavaflow 4 on his site). Don’t miss the spread in Dwell Magazine’s November 2008 issue! Take in the view of the monkeypod tree canopied garden as you relax in the screened living room or on the sun drenched deck. As the sun sets, you’ll be ready to spiral down the lava-red staircase to your choice of two king size master bedrooms where you can have your own island dreams. ...Read more

Additional Location Information

Hale "Ohai is 45 minutes south of Hilo on the Puna coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. This is the undiscovered jungle side of the island away from the mega resorts and closer to the local folks. A 15 minute walk or 5 minute car ride will get you to clothing optional black sand Kehena beach. The lava is flowing into the ocean about 10 miles to the south. 25 minutes to the north are the Kapoho tidal pools for snorkeling and a warm thermal pond for swimming and relaxing.
