Our son is a Beverly Hills Architect and he designed this house as a special retirement home for his parents. The house has bamboo 23' vaulted, hand rubbed beam ceilings with floating globe pendants. There is a curved staircase with Mango steps that leads from the living room to the 2nd bedroom and on to the master bedroom. The whole house has massive windows to take advantage of the 180 degree view of the Wai Opae Tide Pools. One of the most spectacular things about this house is that it faces east and every morning the sun rises with awe inspiring colors while tinting the tide pools all shades of gold, orange and pink.
Our home has 2 bedrooms plus a loft and 2 baths and sleeps 6. The Master bedroom is on the top floor and is a loft room allowing an amazing view of the ocean from the queen size bed. Whether it is a fast storm, a brilliant sunrise or the changing colors of the tide pools the view never gets old. There isn't a better place to sit back with a good book then up on the Master Bedroom lanai (deck) with it's comfortable chairs and endless ocean views. The master bathroom is very unique in that it has it's own lanai with an indoor/outdoor shower and a free standing deep soaking tub. The cabinets are made from Mango wood and the counter top is flamed black granite.
The guest bedroom also with a queen size bed and was designed so that it is five feet higher than the living room. The front wall is movable which lets the ocean view be the center piece of this room. There are floor to ceiling jalousie windows framing the bed and looking down on the back yard tide ponds For additional guests there are two single futons in an office loft above the master bedroom to make the home comfortable for 6 people.
The main bathroom has a tiled tub and shower combination with large windows. The resin sink has real sea shells and coral, There is a laundry area with full sized front loading washer and dryer and storage area behind bi-fold doors.
The kitchen is modern and has top of the line African Ribbon Mahogany cabinets with flamed and leathered granite counters. The appliances are new and include a side by side refrigerator with an ice maker that holds 10 lbs of ice. It also has a dishwasher and microwave oven and a large island with a gas stove and oven and seating for three. The island looks out to the living room and the large lanai so the cook can always be part of the group. There is enough space in the Kitchen so that 4 people can work comfortably. The kitchen has it's own 'breakfast' Lanai with table and chairs - The perfect spot to have that morning cup of coffee while watching the sunrise. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything needed to prepare gourmet meals.
There are two sets of bi-fold doors in the living room; one faces the ocean and makes the ocean become a living part of the house and the other opens up on to the lanai providing a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors. After a busy day of snorkeling and sight seeing there are comfortable chairs and a place to put the feet up and relax while watching a 42' flat screen tv with satellite feed and wireless internet.
Out the living room bi-fold doors is the lanai with it's wood deck, outdoor couch, loveseat and chair, bbq, ti ki bar and jacuzzi. The 600 sq ft lanai not only over looks the ocean it also overlooks the back yard which has two large ponds that rise and fall with the ocean tide. The ponds are brackish (which means that they are a combination of fresh and salt water) and are home to a large school of Tilapia fish which love to be fed.
Because the lot is only 5 feet above sea level the house has been built on 12' cement columns.
There are stranded bamboo hardwood floors through out the house, mango custom cabinetry, unique floor plan and awe inspiring views which make this a perfect vacation home for anyone that wants to hear the waves, watch the whales jump, have world class snorkeling 40 ft from the front door and experience the most glorious sunrises imaginable.TripAdvisor property ID 2295501...Read more
Kapoho Sunrise House is located in Kapoho Vacationland community. The neighborhood is friendly and caring. When you stay with us it is like staying in Old Hawaii where aloha abounds. People are friendly and always willing to pass on some favorite place to visit or the best place to snorkel.
It is wonderful to look out and watch the sun coming out in all it's glory every morning. The view over the tide pools never gets boring as the sun light skips across the tide pools in an ever changing dance of colors. Even though our home is 8 miles from the closest town there is a multitude of activities to keep you busy. The snorkeling is amazing right out the front door. There is a large hot pond just a mile south that is the epitome of relaxation - just floating in the 90 degree water while watching the clouds play across the sky and the palm trees sway to the trade winds. Another mile down the road is a County park with camping and surfing and buggie boarding and a boat ramp (the only one on this side of the coast). If you are lucky you can catch one of the fishermen coming in with the day or night catch and you might be able to buy a very fresh fish. Great to make "Poke"-- whether you make it yourself from your fresh fish or buy it from the local markets Poke is a Hawaiian Fresh Fish Treat.
I love to drive the whole length of the "red road" - the Kapoho Kalapana Rd. There are places where the crashing waves reach the clouds, a bathing suit optional black sand beach, the new Kalapana black beach , stretches of highway that are in a living tree tunnel and lava that wasn't there last year. One of the most beautiful drives in all Hawaii. Take your time and share a pineapple or papayas while watching the relentless might of the waves.
A not to be missed activity is to head down to Kalapana on Wed Night for their farmers market. It is so much more than a farmers market: There is a open air bar, local and international food booths, crafts, and best of all the music of the islands. The band plays all night, no breaks for them, and plays diverse types of music. It is not uncommon when the band plays an old Hawaiian favorite that people will get up and hula or if it is rock the twist or the Texas two step. A very fun night.
