Additional Location Information

Paje is a village on the Tanzania island of Unguja (Zanzibar). It is located on the south-east coast between the villages Bwejuu and Jambiani.

The fishermen's village is situated on a beautiful strip of seashore. You can find small shops and two supermarkets near the crossroad. Further inside the village you can find more small shops, where you can buy souvenirs, especially vivid coloured paintings in Zanzibarian style, handicrafts and various coconut products.

Paje is built in traditional Swahili style, so it can be interesting to make short trips through long dusty 'streets' and enjoy the local cordial atmosphere. Local people usually spend the whole day in their usual work - gathering seaweed, making ropes of coconut fibers or repairing and making boats (dhows). If you want to take photos, please be kind and ask before you take a shot. For many locals this is a pleasant source of income.

As Paje is a famous kite surfing spot, most tourists are either keen on kitesurfing here or learning the basics of this popular sport. The lagoon in Paje has one of the best conditions in the world to learn how to kitesurf. First, this is because there is a very consistent side-onshore wind blowing most of the year. Second, the lagoon has a sandy bottom and is very shallow during low tide, what makes it very safe for the beginning kitesurfer. And finally, the lagoon is mostly flat because the reef protects it from waves.

During the year monsoons are passing Zanzibar, that's why tourist are advised to check the weather forecast before planning their trip.
