Papa’aloa is a sleepy little town along the beautiful Hamakua Coast, just 24 miles north of Hilo and about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. Your studio is a separate building in front of the main house, 10 x 20’ with a fully equipped kitchenette, a queen-size bed, a small private bathroom and your own outdoor sitting area. Also you will have access to the main lanai with a gorgeous view of the ocean and coconut palms.
There is WiFi, as well as a TV with basic cable and a DVD/CD player and a small collection of DVDs. There is a landline with free phone calls to Canada and the US. There is decent cell phone coverage if you have AT&T;, but other cell phones tend to have intermittent reception. You will have access to the washing machine and clothesline, and you can arrange to use the Jacuzzi Whirlpool tub in the main house.
Papaaloa has a perfectly sunny climate with refreshing trade winds and just enough rain; usually between 68-72 degrees. The house is in a friendly Filipino neighborhood, high on the hill above the ocean. You will be surrounded by a tropical garden on a quarter acre of land rich in banana trees, mangos, lychee, oranges, lemons and limes. You can wander around the yard, lounge under the majestic lychee tree, enjoy the tropical fruit trees, the aroma of orange blossoms, and the orchestra of birds. I will respect your privacy while offering warm hospitality.
You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19.
It’s usually quiet and peaceful here, with plenty of local color with the occasional roosters and sheep and coqui frogs in the distance. In the late afternoons, the children enjoy playing in the street. On occasion, the neighboring dogs get excited.
You can start your morning with free papayas and bananas—and mangos when in season—as well as coffee and tea (black and herbal). I like to cut a papaya in half, remove the seeds, slice in a banana and squeeze some fresh lime juice on top. Yum!
When I’m home and in the mood, I’ll be glad to prepare a delicious homemade dinner (non-wheat, non-dairy) for $10, or a breakfast or lunch for $5. By the way, I am the author of 16 books on holistic healing, including Joyous Food for High Energy People with recipes free of wheat, dairy, refined sugar and red meat and I’m an excellent cook.
There are excellent masseurs in the area, including lomilomi Hawaiian massage, for $60 hr. If you wish, I can arrange for a masseur to come to the Studio, for no extra charge. Also local tours can be tailored to suit your interests. If desired, a complete Healing Vacation Package can be arranged.
This is a "green" facility. All cleaning products are nontoxic. The linen is 100% cotton. The garden is organic. You will have your own small private bathroom, with a shower.
Please refrain from smoking, drinking, loud noises and strong-smelling perfumes during your stay in this peaceful, meditative setting. No pets, please, but I do have a cat. “Big Daddy” is very friendly but he is not allowed in the studio or in the guest room, so if you have allergies, this should not be a problem.
If you are traveling with others, there is also a guest room with a Queen bed inside the main house. It has a view of the ocean and I rent it out occasionally. Inquire about availability. Or we can bring the futon couch into the studio, which sleeps one more person comfortably. I can also put a foam futon on the floor if there are children.
Since I am relatively new to Flip Key, here's a Review about the Studio:
The studio was really nice. We had a wonderful time, and Joy went well beyond what we had expected in terms of being a terrific host. She provided us with information, suggestions of things to do, and offered fantastic fruit from her garden. Joy was so good to make sure we had our privacy, yet was there anytime we needed her. I would not hesitate to stay with her again. -- Steve from Kansas
It was a delight to stay at Joy's Studio. The location was easy to find in a quiet residential neighborhood. Joy was a kind host. The studio was clean and very functional. Even in late July I didn't need an air conditioner. The view from her Lanai was magnificent. Joy was also very generous with her fruit. What a joy to have fresh smoothies with organic fruit in the mornings. -- Kim from CA
"staying at joy's place was a real plaesure. this place is a hawaiian paradise - u smell the big island air - u hear the big island nature - and u taste the best hawaiian papayas, bananas, avocados... fresh from joy's garden. perfect for relaxed-snugness-holiday-people. joy is a lovely, kind, interesting woman, who takes exellent care of you. we would love to come back once in a while to get some more relaxed-paradise days. thank you for everthing joy - we wish you just the best. -- Topias from Germany

Additional Location Information
This is an excellent central location, just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. It’s a half hour drive south to Hilo along the coast, past the lush valleys and waterfalls. There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo, with much less vog (smog from the volcano) than in Kona. From the studio, you can drive north a half hour to historic Honokaa with its restored old-fashioned movie theatre, and a little further North to the lush Waipeo Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another half hour will take you to the town of Waimea with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries. Or go up Saddle Road to the world class observatory on Mauna Kea (bring a set of warm clothes for that trip!).
