Additional Location Information

Constructed between 1605-1612 by King Henri IV, the Place des Vosges is the oldest city square in Paris and a monument of urban planning. Originally known as the Place Royale, the site is remarkable for its identical building façades, the first of their kind in Europe. After the revolution, Napoleon renamed the square after the Vosges department of France, which was the first to pay its taxes to the new republic.

Over the years, the Place des Vosges has housed iconic historic figures, including most notably Victor Hugo (who lived across the Place at number 6!). Today, you'll be able to count Marion Cothillard and Dominique Strauss Kahn as your neighbors.

The Marais is indeed a historically and culturally fascinating district. In addition to its striking architecture the Maris is home to the Centre Pompidou, Musée de Carnavalet, and the Picasso Museum. It's artistically vibrant and packed with shops, galleries, and fabulous restaurants. Easily accessible by metro, all of Paris's attractions are within a 15 minute commute.
