Additional Location Information

The Auteuil area boasts lots of shops and restaurants, boutiques, cafes...

The 16th arrondissement is considered bourgeois and secure and is two steps away from the well known Place du Trocadero, dominated by the Palais de Chaillot. The central terrace between its two wings has been kept clear, forming a perfect frame for the Eiffel Tower beyond. The vast building houses the radical Theatre National de Chaillot and four museums, only two of which are currently visitable, the Musee de l'Homme and the Musee de la Marine.

The 16th arrondissement conjures visions of elegance, class and old money. When you rent an apartment in this area, you join the “BCBG” echelon (bon chic bon genre – chic & in style) in Paris’s residential den. Yet, this arrondissement is much more than a gilded cage for the cosmopolitan well-to-do.

Situated on the rightbank in Paris’s southwest, the 16th encompasses several different neighborhoods. Towards the northeast, tourists overrun the area around Place du Trocadero where incomparable views of the Eiffel Tower draw sightseers and their cameras. A legion of museums also attract visitors. Palais de Tokyo, the self-declared ‘anti-museum’ curates edgy contemporary art exhibits. For more modern art, visit the Musée d’Art Moderne. At the Musée Galliera, patrons revel in fashions past and present while naval enthusiasts line up at the Musée national de la marine. Interested in Impressionism? Although a bit out of the way, the Musée Marmottan merits the trek east and conveniently places visitors on the border of the green Bois de Boulogne, the perfect spot for a summer picnic. For horseback riders, the Centre Hippique Touring Club de France (French site), located in the Bois de Boulogne, welcomes all levels at its equestrian club and school.

Just behind Trocadero lies the Passy Cemetery, an oasis rarely discovered by tourists. Its famous residents include painter Edouard Manet and composer Claude Debussy, among others. Father of French literature Honoré de Balzac lived nearby from 1840-1847. To dodge his creditors, the novelist rented the now Maison de Balzac under a false name. Today, visitors can explore his only existing domicile on rue Raynouard.
Apart from the tourist pockets, the 16th is a sophisticated residential haven. Quarters such as Passy, Auteuil, which Napoleon III annexed to Paris in the mid-19th century, still exude old wealth and privilege, and also traces of internationalism. In fact, many diplomats and affluent foreigners took up residence in this arrondissement on account of its proximity to many embassies.

On almost any day of the week, a market can be found in the 16th. Bring your shopping trolley – in this arrondissement, it’s a fashion statement.
