This is a very private and hidden gem. Tucked away under the roof eves of an historic Hotel Particulier this recently renovated secret spot is filled with light, air, and silence. It is located in the Saint Germain des Pres district just between rue Saint-Andres des Arts and the left bank of the Seine and is just steps from the rue Bucci market, Place Saint Michel, the Seine, Ile de la Cite and Notre Dame Cathedral, and is in the center of the narrow maze of passage ways and small streets that abound between the Blvd. Saint Germain and the river.
This recently renovated space has newly refinished floors and freshly painted walls that accent the ancient roof beams. There are windows on both sides of the apartment so it's always filled with light and pleasant cross breezes. One side overlooks tree filled gardens and in the far distance you can see the top of the Eiffel Tower. The windows on the other side overlook the main courtyard, and in the distance you can see the bell towers of Notre Dame Cathedral.
This simple but elegant space has a very comfortable and high quality Queen sofa bed. The high tech coffee table has wheels to roll out of the way.... and can be raised to make a desk work space... or even opened into a larger dining table. The leather chairs are complimented by additional folding garden chairs that are kept in the full size hanging closet. There are plenty of shelves and built-in drawers under the eves and when you want to sleep you can close the solid wood window shutters to completely darken the room. Equipment includes a small TV, stereo, a phone, and high speed Internet access with Wi-Fi.
The studio has a small efficiency kitchen equipped with a ceramic cook-top with four cooking elements, a toaster oven, an under counter refrigerator, and all the dishes and cooking equipment needed to prepare meals.
The modern bathroom has a full bathtub with a wall mounted shower, a basin, and toilet. There is also a small clothes washer/dryer in an adjacent storage closet.
Some History: This studio was the writing workshop (Atelier) of Henri Michaux. Henri Michaux (May 1899 to October 1984) was a highly idiosyncratic Belgian-born poet, writer, and painter who wrote in French. He later took French citizenship. Michaux is best known for his esoteric books written in a highly accessible style, and his body of work includes poetry, travelogues, and art criticism. Marie Louise, the wife of the famous writer, poet and painter, Henri Michaux, was captivated by this 17th century Hotel Particulier, where they lived and received friends such as Sylvia Beach, T.S. Eliot, Vladamir Nabokov, and Jean Cocteau, who visited Michauxs apartment just below his private atelier.
“It is the prettiest apartment around”, Marie Louise writes in a letter to her mother, <a place where one can dream. [I]t has great allure,> she adds. <It is between the place Saint-Michel and Saint Germain-Des-Pres, in old Paris and [is] classified as a historic monument.> Then she describes the <small wooden steps to another floor> which is the atelier where Michaux worked and where <One might imagine oneself in the countryside. One doesn’t hear a sound.> What was once Henri Michauxs studio is truly a quiet retreat in the middle of this bustling city of lights.
