Halfway between the stately Grands Boulevards and the historic brow of Montmartre, the 9th arrondissement has inspiration aplenty. Here you’ve breathlessly trendy bars, beautiful Belle Époque galleries and, on the rue des Martyrs, a home that draws on every age of style. There’s a classic turn to its columns and decorative cornicing, while the vibrant artwork and fizzes of primary colour speak of a contemporary flair. You’ve also a wildly styled bunk bedroom, a sitting room with boundless light and space and a location with just the right degree of bustle.
A composer and a stylist, your Danish hosts are creative, chatty and laid-back. With a son and a daughter, they have been living in Paris for ten years.
In the mix
This Haussmann-style apartment is both handsomely historic and beautifully modern – and weaves the two strands together wonderfully. You’ve all the space you could wish for in the sitting room, with its endless wooden flooring, handsomely corniced ceilings and, in between, two classical columns. Step through them and onto the blue expanse of the corner sofa with a book. Light floods through the French doors and, even once the day wanes, an array of statement lamps continue to dazzle. The kitchen is bright in red, white and blue, and you’ve a dining table that’s just as jazzy.
Throw wide the windows and breathe deep the balcony air, or go discover the bedrooms. Little ones will be enraptured by the bunk bedroom’s hanging globes and splendid toys, and you’ve plenty of artwork to see as you’re tucking them up. The double is delightfully bright, the master sweetly minimalist and the bathroom stylish and deeply tinted with its enticing double shower.
The rue des Martyrs is where gourmets come for their olive oil, chocolates and choux à la crème. Here you can take a tasty time-out or march off to Montmartre and the soaring Sacré-Cœur. There’s the Grands Boulevards to the south, home to Galeries Lafayette and the glittering Opéra Garnier, and closer to home the nineteenth century treasures of the Musée de la Vie Romantique. As for the heart of town, the métro from Notre-Dame de Lorette to Châtelet takes less than twenty minutes.
