Pawley’s Island & Litchfield Beach
“Kick back and relax.” That feeling is the same today as it was when vacationers first set foot on
the beaches of Pawley’s Island and Litchfield Beach. The families of rice planters who owned
plantations on the nearby rivers first settled Pawley’s Island in the early 1700’s. They moved their
families from their rice plantations on the rivers to their beach homes in May of each year, where
they remained until the first frost in November. This leisurely existence has developed the charm
of Pawley’s Island.
Pawley’s Island continues to be known for its carefree, laid-back lifestyle. Here you’ll find the
white-sand beaches are ideal for walking and collecting seashells; the ocean and surrounding
creeks teem with fish and swimmers; gentle breezes abound for a day of sailing and rope
hammocks are a favorite for after-lunch naps. At the end of each day glorious sunsets will delight
the eye and nourish the soul. With a mixture of centuries-old beachfront cottages and modern
resort-style accommodations, Pawley’s Island offers the best of all possible worlds.

Fishing & Boating - With five freshwater rivers, the Intracoastal Waterway, swamps, saltwater
creeks, bays, inlets and miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, Georgetown County offers an
endless adventure for boaters and fishermen. The black-water rivers in Georgetown County are
amazingly beautiful and bountiful. Winding through miles of cypress swamp, these waters shelter
bass, bream, warmouth and catfish year-round. Boaters also run up these rivers. They come to
view the native species of birds and other wildlife, and to picnic on the dandy shores that breach
the curtain of cypress and marsh on the water’s edge. Murrells Inlet provides boat, kayak, jet
skies, and WaveRunner rentals. You can also fly high parasailing.
Biking- the Neck is a paved cycling and walking trail that meanders through woods, residential
areas and over bridges from Murrells Inlet to Pawley’s Island. It encompasses 12 scenic miles.
Beach roads are also very bicycle-friendly and are great for walking and inline skating as well.
Hunting - Gun enthusiasts can head out to the county’s back country, where they’ll find several
quail-hunting and sporting-clay facilities. During the hunting season, wild turkey, boar, and deer
flock to the county’s many wetlands and forests, along Winyah Bay and the Santee Delta. And
don’t miss the Winyah Bay Heritage Festival, a celebration of waterfowl decoys and other
hunting and fishing collectibles that have been a part of the region’s way of life for more than 300
years.
Huntington Beach State Park- This 2,500-acre park is considered one of the finest bird-watching
domains on the east coast. Among the waterfowl are the great blue heron, snowy egret,
oystercatcher, and eastern brown pelican. Hikers can venture through a nature trail that extends
into the forest and winds along boardwalks in the marsh, where visitors can view alligators from
observation decks. Huntington Beach State Park is a remarkable place of varied habitats for your

is a nursery to abundant plants and animals. Surf fishing or fishing from a park jetty is also
available.

centuries.
