Charlie Bates Cottage is an iconic part of Penneshaw's history. The cottage has proudly stood watch over the beautiful shores of Hog's Bay for more than 110 years. An original limestone settler's cottage, it was built for Charles Bates, son of Harry Bates. Both father and son with their extended families made an amazing and very colourful contribution to the early settlement of the East End of Kangaroo Island.
Once the only homestead on a large landholding in Penneshaw, the cottage still remains today even though the town has been been significantly populated....in Kangaroo Island terms that is! Nestled on a large, sloping block she boasts magnificent ocean views, is conveniently located only 2 minutes from the Sealink ferry terminal by car and a very short walk to the safe swimming beach at the end of the road.
Charlie's has been lovingly restored and refurbished to provide our guests with all the conveniences you need to experience a truly memorable holiday. We provide the perfect base for couples, families and friends travelling together so you can experience the very best that Kangaroo Island has to offer from the comfort of somewhere that feels like home. Our guests often comment they never want to leave.
A modern extension to the original settler's cottage consists of a fully equipped kitchen including a full size fridge/freezer, microwave, quality kitchenware, a dining area with ocean views, laundry (with washing machine and clothes dryer), spacious heated bathroom with separate shower, clawfoot bath, and an additional toilet. These facilities and our wonderful location combine to make this unique piece of Kangaroo Island's history the ideal base for your getaway.

The Charlie Bates Cottage is a lovely place to stay. My family (7 total - all adults)found it to be roomy enough yet cozy. We made excellent (excessive?)use of the washer/dryer. The feeding of the wallabies in the evening was tremendous. This was a great base to explore the eastern end Kangaroo Island.

I can't speak more highly of the cottage. Easy to find, clean comfortable and well serviced. Grandparents ourselves and the seven year old all loved it. Price was spot on, so wish we were there right now, out of the hubbub of life. And a fantastic atmosphere about the place. Thanks Nadia and John for opening this up for everyone to enjoy.

Very interesting stay in an authentic all cottage. We then followed some of the history of the family whose cottage we were staying in. Everything was there we needed. Loved siting on the verander and watching the world go by.
"Wonderful stay at a place full of Kangaroo Island history!"

We loved Charlie Bates Cottage! It was perfect for our stay. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and well equipped. The history of the cottage was very interesting. The cottage is close to town and only a short stroll via the beautiful beach. Close to the ferry terminal, you can't go wrong. I would highly recommend the cottage for couples and families alike. Kangaroo Island is a gem and this place is a great part of it!

Charlie Bates Cottage was exactly what we expected - a comfortable cottage surrounded by tranquility. A gorgeous setting with everything we needed in the cottage itself as well as close to shops, the ferry and the beaches. A fantastic relaxing family escape which we will recommend to friends and family.

First impressions were excellent, once settled in we realised that the owners have gone over and beyond with equiping this beautiful little cottage with everything you could ever need. The area is nice and quiet, plenty to see and explore and just a stones throw away from the Sealink ferry. History abounds in this cottage with interesting letters and paintings from 100 years ago. If you are looking to relax, take it easy and enjoy what KI has to offer then this cottage is the place to stay and value for money. Will definately come back again.

We enjoyed Charlie Bates cottage, especially the connections with the history of the island! It was renovated well and we enjoyed the provisions. Some kindling for the first night would have made it even better.

Stayed in Charlie Bates' Cottage for three great days last November. The cottage is close to the ferry terminal and we had great fun watching the ferries going back and forth from the verandah. It is very handy, within walking distance to Penneshaw, the fairy penguins, the beach at the end of the street and the wallabies hopping from all directions at dusk to the front lawn every night. The owners had thought of everything to keep you amused during your stay - I have not seen another one that is so well equipped. Thanks for your hospitality.

We sat on the front steps and fed wallabies,
We sipped on beautiful wine (Sunset Winery) and watched the most brilliant of stars,
We ate honey ice cream and marvelled at the scenery,(Griffiths Bee Farm)
We slept in beds as comfy as can be and listened to the waves lapping the shore,
We were embraced by the locals, like family returning home,
We loved Charlie Bates Cottage,
We loved Penneshaw,
You didn't tell us, we wouldn't want to leave.

We only had the opportunity to stay 2 nights in this gorgeous little cottage, which is so deserving of a week, (like the whole island!). Absolutely everything that a guest could require is there, nothing has ben overlooked not even the smallest thing which makes for a very enjoyable stay. Many times places are advertised as being set up for say 4 people but often there is insufficient crockery etc for the same number. Not so here, more than enough of everything! Loved the opportunity to have a log fire going in Feb - quite an experience for Queenslanders!!! Thank you thank you thank you. On a more personal level, a special thanks to Nadia who was so lovely to deal with during our frequent phone conversations!!

Cute cottage in a convenient location. Nicely renovated with pretty views and close proximity to beach and restaurants. Only downside was bumping into the cleaner when arriving at 1600 and some dirty towels from the previous occupant still floating around the house.
"Staying here was a wonderful part of our KI experience."

I would highly recommend this beautiful, fully equipped, comfortable cottage that was an absolute pleasure to come 'home' to after spending the day seeing the fantastic sights of KI. Spotlessly clean, it has everything that one requires for a great holiday stay. Loved the 'visiting locals' each evening! (gorgeous wallabies would congregate on the front lawn) The only minor 'criticism' would be that as it isn't located centrally on the island, long drives are needed to get to and from various places of interest. However the beautiful views of the bay at Penneshaw more than makes up for that small inconvenience. Thank you Nadia and John for providing such excellent accommodation.

I stayed in Charlie Bates cottage with two twenty-somethings, in October. The site of the cottage was perfect, overlooking the sea and within easy reach of the Frenchman's Cove at Penneshaw which has some of the penguin nests we so wanted to see. The bedrooms were very comfortable, the kitchen well laid out and the bathroom and toilet facilities great. Our only initial concern was the number of flies in the house when we arrived - despite our virtually Buddhist objection to killing anything, we ended up knocking loads of flies on the head and will have to pay for it in our next lives. This was due to the poorly fitting fly screens probably, but a cottage of that age is bound to have some problems in this area. However we would return any time and loved our time there. The owners wife was very helpful in giving me information throughout the booking process which was a little complicated due to the fact that we live in the UK.
