A traditional french property in grounds of 2 acres, Maison Maitre, a former cognac distillery, is perfect for an intimate holiday for two or larger parties alike, sleeping up to 12. Offering flexible and spacious accommodation there are up to four large bedrooms each with ensuite or dedicated facilities, including one dedicated for children. Maison Maitre sits on the edge of Preroux, in the countryside of the sunny Charente Maritime, a kilometre away from the main village of Perignac and a 35 minute drive from the Atlantic beaches.
Maison Maitre is a generously sized property with spacious rooms. It is equally comfortable for families, couples or smaller groups. This is a rare opportunity to rent a beautiful, traditional French house in its own grounds of two acres, of which over an acre is a park of mature trees.
There is a sense of history as you enter the main reception rooms with their marble fireplaces, elegant plaster work and lofty heights. Climb the spiral staircase to the upper level and you will tread antique wooden floors to airy louvred shuttered rooms. Enjoy the comfort of a large four poster bed and wake up to a triple aspect view of the park. Benefit from the convenience of a well appointed kitchen, shower room and bathroom as well as satellite TV and wi-fi. Open the double doors to the front elevation and terrace to take in the aspect of the private park and enjoy an aperitif in the evening shade of locally distilled Cognac or glass of wine from neighbouring Bordeaux. Step into the secure, enclosed courtyard and wander across to the preau for a quiet siesta on the swing seat or shady lunch around the table. Enter the walled garden to a tranquil, safe, secluded space perfect for sun worshippers or a cooling dip in the private pool.
The village of Perignac lies one kilometre to the east. It has a Michelin recommended restaurant [La Gourmandiere], an excellent family restaurant and bar [L'orchidee], pizza take away, village store with integral artisan butcher, pharmacy, hairdresser, tobacconist and boulangerie for fresh daily bread all within walking distance. Every Sunday morning, a stall sells fresh oysters in the square outside the village church and on Tuesdays there is a full fish stall in the same square. The local cognac distillery [open for degustations] is opposite the church.
There are many local routes for cycling and walking. Details for bike hire and organised tours are available on request.
Only 7 minutes away is the medieval town of Pons with restaurants to suit every taste and all the local shops and amenities you are likely to need. Saintes is 20 minutes away, Cognac, 15 minutes.
Located in the Charente-Maritime, known for long summer sunny days, pretty islands and white-washed villages, towns and buildings steeped in history, you can choose from more than 100 beaches, all within easy reach. For other interest visit the zoo at La Palmyre, the Aquarium at La Rochelle, Futurescope at Poiters, the oyster beds at Marennes or cross a bridge to the Ile d'Oleron or Ile de Re.
Further afield, take the ferry from Royan and the whole of the Medoc opens up before you. Travel in the direction of Bordeaux to the magnificent wine areas of Sauternes, Pomerol and St Emilion or to Arcachon to climb the largest sand dune in Europe.
