Additional Location Information

Pickering is a charming and historic market town (pop. 6,500) situated on the northern extremity of the Vale of Pickering, and nestling under the North York Moors National Park. There is a lively street market on a Monday, and the town also boasts a museum of rural life, a ruined castle, the steam railway and an extremely good example of mediaeval wall-paintings in the Parish Church. The town has a good range of smaller shops, a co-op supermarket, a large antique centre, an auction room, and is well supplied with cafés, and eating places to suit most tastes. The surrounding area comprises rich agricultural land (supplying the many local produce farm shops) in the Vale of Pickering, heather uplands in the North York Moors National Park, broad-leaf and plantation forests, pristine river systems, and areas designated ‘of outstanding natural beauty’ . All around are charming, unspoiled villages, home to an abundance of artists, potters and craftsmen.
The nearest main line railway station is Malton, there are also buses from Scarborough, Leeds and York.
