About Dorado

A fun, Caribbean city with a beach boasting soft sand and turquoise waters, Dorado is an obvious destination for a vacation. But it's more than just a lovely beach vacation; Dorado's also a championship golfing resort and a great place to stay in a vacation rental with FlipKey.

About Dorado

Sitting on the north of the island of Puerto Rico, Dorado is a geographically large mix of affluent residential and commercial areas, together with a vibrant and busy downtown area. The 'town square' is a colorful plaza where every year on June 13 locals celebrate Saint Anthony of Padua with a traditional festival.

Golf lovers come here in their droves, thanks to the several top-class golf courses to choose from, and which are spread throughout the principality (Dorado is the name of the region as well as the town). Many of the courses are part of large resorts with hotels, restaurants and spa facilities.

Known as 'La Ciudad Ejemplar' or Exemplary City, Dorado's first mayor was landowner Jacinto López Martínez who petitioned the Puerto Rican government for independence for Dorado and its surrounds back in 1842. It briefly lost it again in 1902, but only for three years.

What to do

Check out the beaches. The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Dorado Beach (on land previously purchased by the Rockefeller family) is one of the best on the whole island. A little further west from Dorado town is the secluded Playa de Cerro Gordo, now with showers and fire pits for a great day out.

Go sports fishing for red snappers and groupers with on an organized reef-fishing trip where you'll be taught how to use jigs and spinning reels.

Attempt one of the championship golf courses in the area. There's three: the Dorado Beach East Course, the Plantation Pineapple Course or the Plantation Sugarcane Course.

Photograph the bull's head that nature carved out of rock at Ojo del Buey Park and enjoy a picnic with the bubbling La Plata river nearby.

Historians and interior design fans will love the Museum Casa del Rey, a former garrison built in 1923 and the king and queen's 'holiday home’.
