About Franklin

The seventh-largest city in Tennessee, Franklin sits 21 miles south of the state’s capital, Nashville. Founded in 1799 by state senator Abram Maury, the city is named after Benjamin Franklin himself.

Some of the bloodiest hours of the American Civil War were fought right here. One of the deadliest was in 1864 with 37,000 men battling over a two-mile stretch. Forty buildings in the town—including large sprawling estate homes—became makeshift hospitals in order to accommodate the 10,000 casualties of the battle. Three of those homes are hugely popular visitor attractions today.

Downtown Franklin’s historic district is regarded as one of the top 10 great neighborhoods in America by the highly-regarded American Preservation Association.

Modern Franklin consists of impressive boutique stores, upmarket restaurants the Cool Springs Galleria—one of the largest shopping malls in the entire Southeast.
