There are some of Brittany's most beautiful and spectacular sights along this coast with the Islands of Ouessant and Molene, the wild Crozon peninsula, the points of Toulinguet and numerous quaint fishing harbours.
The Saint-Mathieu light house is enclosed by the ruins of an abbey and offers guided visits between April and November, which take you to the top of a dizzying 163 stairs to enjoy a stunning panorama of the bay and beyond.
The Fort de Bertheaume, a fortified islet with a rugged beauty is battered by the winds and tides as it towers above the narrows of Brest. There are video guided visits from June - September. For those with an adventuruos spirit, you can attack the fort by a via ferrata route, or slide along a 200m zip-wire which hangs 38m above the sea. Not an activity for the faint-hearted but an original, inspiring way to discover the fort and accessible to anyone of 10 years or over! The fort is also used as a spectacular venue for Son et Lumiere performances, folk concerts, danse and theatre and has a creperie providing traditional Breton fare.
The museum of the Abbey de St Mathieu, is situated at the heart of the abbey and shows monastic life throughout the ages. A 17 minute video gives visitirs an insight into this unique place. The museum is open in June, September and October at weekends and daily (except Sunday 10h-12h30 and14h- 19h00) in July and August.
Local Activities
There are great water sports facilities right on the doorstep (Plage Bertheaume) with hire of a variety of equipment or tuition if you prefer. Plage du Trez Hir, is another large fine sand beach which is ideal for water sports and fishing. There is a childrens play area at the edge of the beach.
This is a breathtakingly beautiful coast with marvellous opportunities for coastal walks, with GR34 passing just nearby.
Oceanopolis in Brest is a world-class oceanarium which everyone should visit.
Bicycles can be hired from the tourist office for 3 euros per hour/6.5 euros per half day/13 euros per day and 68.5 euros per week.
