Driving Directions from the Airport

From the rental car desk in the airport, depending on the company, they will probably escort you next door to the lot in a shuttle. From there you will exit and go left (west)
from the airport (passing the Best Western “Las Mercedes” on your right) and travel on that road (the Carretera Norte) all the way along the north side of Managua. Try to stay in the middle lane, and stop fast on yellow lights. The road is pretty straight. There is one overpass type thing, and at one point the road seems to end at a random stop sign, but you just need to jog a little to the left and keep going straight. Eventually you will come to a big hill and will be able to tell that you are leaving the city. It will take 20-30 minutes to get to this point. Go up and over the hill and the road will spit you out going right/northwest on the new Leon highway. From there it is pretty much a straight shot. You will go through a few small towns (Mateare, Nagarote, La Paz Centro), then, after about an hour, the road will T in a place called Izapa. Go right and continue for about 30 more minutes to León.

When you get into Leon, you will come up on a Shell station. Go straight and then you will bear left around a turn and take a right where a small brown sign says "centro historico" (just after a two-story bar). Take that turn and go into the city - down then up a hill. You will come up between the back-side of the main cathedral (on left) and the market (a city block with vendor stalls on the right) through what feels like a parking lot. Go one more block and take a left on the corner that has two banks and a Curacao electronics store. From the left turn (ten feet after which there are ATMs on both sides if you still need cash) drive 9 blocks and take a left. Go one block to the stoplight and a take a right, going west towards Poneloya. You are now on Calle Central (also called Calle Ruben Dario) headed out of town. Keep going straight. After a few hundred meters you will come to a fork - stay left. From here it is a straight shot. Drive 10 miles from the fork and you will come down a hill into the beach town. There will be a little store on your right and a fork. Left goes to Las Penitas and right goes to Poneloya. Go right. There is only one main street in town that runs along the water. Go about 2 1/2 blocks past the big wood restaurant, "Pariente Salinas", and you'll see a weird house on the left that has a diagonal wall that juts out into the street (which locals call the “Casa de Barco”). Casa Kaya is the second one past that house with the red metal door on the left and a yellow wall.
