We stayed 11 days in the Coconut Cottage, and it was perfect. Location on the east shore is ideal to see the whole island (most activities/tours start in the east). Nearby towns Kapaa and Kilauea have great shopping and restaurants. You're a short drive from the beautiful North Shore beaches (check out our quiet favorite: Hideaways beach.) Anahola is a beautiful place with dramatic mountains and so much green, makes for a beautiful view from the cottage. A weekend produce market and the best kalua pork and huli huli grilled chicken is two minutes down the road at anahola Cafe (better than any Luau).
Dave let us know the ground rules when we arrived - typical stuff for any vacation rental. Dave also described the compost toilet -- like a vaulted pit toilet at a campground, but better because they are emptied often and only used by you.
Dave is a great host with tons of local knowledge. He will even take you on adventures to some of the best places on the island! We hiked to the bottom of Wailua Falls and tubed down the river with tour guides that Dave set up for free! And Dave himself took us on an adventure to see Queen's Bath and swim in a tranquil fresh water pool in a cave -- really fun and again free! You can also rent equipment at the house. We rented a 2-person kayak for a day of river kayaking, and it was a great rate plus Dave will help you get it safely on your rental car.
The cottage itself is charming with nice decor, architecture (the loft bedroom is cool) and all you need to prepare meals--breakfast in bed is fantastic with fresh eggs from the chicken coup near the house and fruit from a produce stand. The TV has Netflix so you can relax and binge-watch "Lost" in the evenings :). The cottage's only downside is you have to go outside momentarily to reach the open-air bathroom.
Definitely stay here if you want a do-it-yourself, authentic island experience that makes you feel like you've lived your whole life on Kauai.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the coconut cottage for just over a week. Can't even begin to explain how perfect this rental is. The islands major commodity is agriculture, so you get the real island experience living on the farm in anahola. We had access to the garden with an amazing selection of vegetables, fruit, herbs and spices, as well as fresh farm eggs most mornings. The place is private and distanced from the turbulence of Princeville (resort city). The land owner, Dave, is an amazing guy. Ridiculously generous and has great local knowledge. He was constantly lending us tools, sending us on free adventure tours to lesser known areas, and always gave great advice. The cottage itself is very quaint, cozy and comfortable. It has a spacious open concept and comes equipped with everything you need. You're the best Dave, Mahalo, and I hope to make it back some day!

Stayed here for our honeymoon. Had a great time just sleeping in and relaxing. Super peaceful and quiet. It was fun and enjoyable being on the little farm enjoying the animals and garden. Living conditions were very clean and comfortable. Kitchen is small and difficult to cook homemade meals, but still had the basics to do some stuff. Dave is a great character, very nice and never invaded our space. We really loved the outdoor bathroom, made the real Hawaiian life fill real being able to see king kong mountain as you shower. Compost toilet was different but wasn't bad at all, again added to the real island life experience. The beaches near by were practically empty and we're amazing for snorkeling and shell searching. Definitely have been recommending friends and family to do the coconut cottage. We loved it and would do it again in a heart beat. Thank you Dave for making our honeymoon memorable:)
