Description from owner

Description

Less than an hour's drive from Dublin Airport, this is a two storey, stone-built farmhouse, located on a working family farm. The property was originally built in the early 1800s, first appearing on the census of 1830. In 2006, it was completely redeveloped. It was knocked, rebuilt and extended, using all the old, original stone.

It has a large kitchen/dining area, utility room with laundry facilities and downstairs bathroom. It also has two reception rooms downstairs. Upstairs comprises a master bedroom, which is en-suite and two more bedrooms, one double, one triple and the main bathroom. A fourth bedroom is currently used for storage of owner's possessions.

The house has wireless internet, satellite TV, underfloor central heating, a wood burning stove and an open fireplace. It also has an original well dating back almost 200 years, now incorporated into the kitchen floor! It's visible through more than 30 mm of toughened glass.

The large garden and orchard is a peaceful retreat and views around the house are mainly rural landscape, with a working farm to one side. Close by are the homes of two other family members who operate the farm.

WHAT TO DO

Located in the heart of Ireland, County Laois is the perfect base from which to explore the country.

Dublin, with all that it has got to offer, is under 50 miles, and out of traffic can be done in an hour.

Cork, Galway, and Waterford are all less that two hours away. Other places of real interest like Wicklow, Kilkenny and Cashel can be done in under an hour. Lots of visitors venture to the Cliffs of Moher, and even Belfast.

Hiking, fishing, golfing and historical sightseeing holidays are the tourism staple of the local region.

The house is located near the village of Emo, a charming village which boasts the spectacular Emo Court and Gardens which offers a range of parkland walks. The award winning golf course and five star resort The Heritage is a ten minute drive away.

The property is also close to the Slieve Bloom mountains which offer hikes and walks for all abilities. It also has a newly opened cycle track, which begins in the village of Kinnity.

Getting around

The house's location makes it ideal for day-tripping by car to pretty much all of the island. The house is only 10 minutes from Portlaoise and Portarlington train stations. A reliable and reasonable cab service can be recommended. From Portarlington, Dublin is under an hour. Portarlington also gives you direct rail access to Galway and Westport. From Portlaoise, there are direct services to Cork and Killarney. Train travel is a great way to see the country. Getting a cab to Portarlington, and then taking the train to Dublin, for instance, gives great freedom from having to find and pay for parking. The house is also well served by bus. Dublin Coach provides a service from Dubin Airport to nearby towns and villages.

In most instances I meet guest personally. In the days leading up to your stay, I will send detailed directions, with a navigation pin that can be used with Google/Apple maps. On the day of your arrival, I will quickly take you through what you need to know, and that's it.
