Description
Newly restored cave houses situated in the village of Castillejar offers a unique holiday experience in friendly rural surroundings. The houses have been refurbished to a high standard, but still retains a rustic style with many unique features.
The amazing natural insulation of cave houses means that they stay cool in summer and warm in winter a pleasant sixteen degrees. Both properties have wood burning stoves for cosy winter nights. Set in a peaceful location at the edge of the village, the houses have beautiful views across the valley which can be enjoyed from the terrace.
We can offer a range of guided and self guided walking holidays for all levels of ability or simply come and relax and enjoy this wonderful part of Spain If you are looking for a holiday away from crowds love exploring the great outdoors and want to experience the real Spain then this is the place for you.
Special things to see and do
Castillejar is situated between the fertile valleys of the rivers Barbatas and Guardal. Some of the most beautiful natural parks in the country are only minutes away – Sierra de Baza to the south, the Sierras of Huescar, Castril, Segura and Cazorla to the north. These mountains offer stunning contrasts of pine forests, vertical rock faces, trout rivers, lakes and hot springs.
Swimming pools, Lakes, Springs and Spas – There is a large swimming pool with bar restaurant and amphitheatre for concerts. This is situated on the outskirts of the village and is open during the summer months. There is also a large outdoor pool at nearby Cullar, and natural spring water pools in Orce and Huescar.
The intense blue waters of lake Embalse de Negratin are in striking contrast to the landscape, and an ideal place for water sports, here you can relax in the thermal springs which are open every day except for Christmas day.
Hiking, Cycling and Horse Riding – All of these activities can easily be undertaken virtually straight from the doorstep, there are many way marked routes, from simple strolls and walks between villages to more demanding challenges in the surrounding mountains.
We can offer both guided and self guided walking holidays. Bike hire and horse riding are available locally.
Walking holidays - We have owned the cave houses for the past four years during which time we have enjoyed exploring the stunning Natural Parks that surround them. We are now able to offer a range of guided and self guided walking holidays tailored to suit customers specific needs. From simply providing maps and advice or one off guided walking days through to full guided walking weeks.
This beautiful area of Spain offers a stunning variety of walking opportunities from simple strolls between villages along fertile river valleys to full day treks into the surrounding mountains with summits over 2000 metres.
In these serene mountains we have been privileged to see a wide variety of wild life including golden eagles, mountain cats and ibex.

“Fantastic accommodation in the real Spain”
We booked this holiday last minute and received prompt and helpful information for renting the property. We found the cave to be characterful, spacious, well-equipped, peaceful and good value. It was very clean and always a comfortable temperature, providing pleasant respite from the lovely 30C-35C outdoors. The location was fabulous - stunning views, evening sun and only a 10-15 min walk from town - the nearest location for basic food shopping and simple dining. There are scenic river trails nearly for walking or running - the trails were shaded, so it's a good area for those interested in training, or who simply appreciate gentle, flat walks. A car is essential to explore the area - ideally a smaller vehicle as the road to the property is quite narrow - we managed fine with a Ford C-Max, but would not have been keen on anything much bigger. We found four or five fantastic swimming options within half an hour of the property (there were others available but we liked the ones we'd found enough to visit more than once) and enjoyed tapas in various bars in Castillejar. This proved the perfect holiday for relaxing - swimming, sunbathing, enjoying nature (eagles, buzzards etc) and escaping wifi - tho' there was plenty of free wifi in town to keep us all from twitching! The region was superb value - we never spent more than €50 on a meal for 5/ €7 for a round of drinks. This location would not be suitable for those looking for lively entertainment, but for those who want to relax and spend time with friends/family in an interesting, scenic part of the world with lovely climate, the cave would be ideal. (The two caves are adjacent, so a party of up to 10 could be accommodated together). The lake at Negratin was stunning with good swimming, beach area and pedalo rental. We made a longer excursion to the Alhambra Palace, which was well worth the 100km drive. This was an unexpectedly fantastic holiday, which the teens (13-18) really enjoyed too.
