Description from owner

Description

The property is a former paper mill originally built in 1688 which has been renovated into a home for the owners and 2 gites, Le Grand Cornet (Home 1819719) and Le Petit Raisin which are virtually identical. The gites share their own private driveway and car park (approx 10m x 8m). They have been renovated to provide modern facilities while at the same time retaining as much of the character as possible. All the rooms are newly furnished, spacious and comfortable. Each gite has an upstairs with 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6 (2 doubles, 1 twin) and family bathroom. All the bedrooms have wall-mounted electric heaters and the bathroom has a heated towel rail. There are 2 air conditioning units, one upstairs and one downstairs, which allow you to control the inside temperature. Downstairs is open plan with living room, kitchen, dining area and a cosy wood-burning stove. There is a downstairs toilet and each gite has its own private patio (approx 6m x 5m) with dining table for 6.

The property is set in 5 acres of grounds, including garden, woodland and streams and there are free range chickens. Guests are free to explore the grounds and feed the chickens. There is a shared pool terrace, with an 8m x 4m heated inground pool and external wifi and sunloungers for guests to relax and enjoy the surroundings. There is also a badminton net and basketball hoop.

Peaceful countryside location, close by is a public footpath running alongside a river with an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. The river is popular with the local fisherman, and can be fished with a licence. Walking distance to the village of Saint-Séverin which has a local SPAR supermarket, bar, bakery, pharmacy, bank with cash machine, Post Office and a newsagents. Just outside the village is an 18-hole crazy golf course and an outdoor recreation centre at Moulin de Poltrot with canoeing and tree-top zipwires. The hillside village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, one of the most beautiful villages in France, is a 15 minute drive away. It is well worth a visit for its famous monolithic church and a beautiful tree-lined square with cafes and restaurants and its river beach. A short 15 minute drive from the property is a 9 hole FFG golf course, set in peaceful countryside with its own bar/restaurant and tennis courts. The market towns of Riberac, Verteillac and Chalais are all within a 30 minutes drive. Brantome the Venice of Perigord is a 50 minutes drive away and makes for an interesting day out. There is a Benedictine Abbey, excellent restaurants and bars and with a beautiful river running right through it and nearby are the underground caves at Villars. The capital town of Angouleme is a 45 minutes drive away and has a wide range of shops and museums to visit. Just outside is Nautilus an indoor leisure centre with swimming pools and slides. Bergerac is an hour drive away, and the old town has narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. You can take an hour long boat trip on an old gabarres (flat bottomed boat). The Bordeaux, Bergerac and Cognac vineyards are all within a 90 minutes drive. Many vineyards offer tastings and the opportunity to buy first rate wines at the cellar door. In Cognac, Martell, Hennessy (includes a boat ride on the Charente river) and Remy Martin (includes a train ride tour around the estate) offer tours of their cellars/estates. Also well worth visiting is the pretty hilltop town of Saint-Emilion and Montbazillac.

Feel free to contact us to request a different check-in day and/or length of stay and we may well be able to accommodate your request.

Note: Our gites are registered with the Mairie and also the local Sud Charente Tourist Office (to whom we declare our annual Taxe de Sejour return) and who have classified out gites with a 3 star rating.

“Exceptional place to stay with great hosts”

Reviewed 25 Apr 2017

We stayed in one of the gites for a week and not only were the gites very spaceous and comfortable, we had great weather too! The added bonus is that there is a washing machine so you can travel light with clothing. If you are intending on cooking then there is a good range of utensils as well as a dishwasher, and even fresh free-range eggs available from the owners chickens. The village of Saint Severin is only a 15 minute walk and has a Spar supermarket, bars and restaurants as well as a bakery for fresh bread every morning. We ate at the Upcycling Cafe, the owner Lisa was lovely and the food was excellent too. There are bikes available which we were able to use to explore the local area. Every one we met was lovely and friendly. The owners, Jo & Gary, have done a fantastic job with the gites and are A1 hosts, nothing was ever too much trouble. The information provided in the gites is very useful too (sometimes when you visit a place you don't always know the best places to go) so this information helped us plan our week to get the most out of it. Excellent Wifi is a bonus - especially for the children, plus the TV was in English with all the freeview chanels you get at home - also a good range of DVD's to keep the kids amused in the evenings or when too hot outside. We enjoyed our stay so much we have already booked to go back in the August summer holidays!

“one of our best holiday Gites in France !”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2016

We accidentally found "Moulin de la Barde" in our last minute search (2weeks before arrival). Due to a cancelation, there we were lucky to book a week stay in "La petit Raisin". The communication with the owners went very smoothly and a few days later we had the booking confirmation. La petit Raisin is a very perfectly restored house, warm feeling, bright rooms, ... all comfort. There is a lot of information available in the gite about the area and the owners are always available with extra tips :) Lovely pool, very big garden for the kids to play in (petanque, trampoline, small river, ...). Jo, Gary, we had a great stay and we will recommend your gite to all our friends !
